China on Aug. 6 vowed to take countermeasures if the United States follows through on a plan to deploy mid-range ground-launched missiles in Asia.
The director of the Chinese foreign ministrys Arms Control Department, Fu Cong, made the statement after the United States formally withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty with Russia on Aug. 2 and announced plans to deploy missiles in order to deter China.
China will not stand idly by and be forced to take countermeasures should the U.S. deploy intermediate-range ground-based missiles in this part of the world, Fu said.
Fu also called on South Korea, Japan, and Australia to not allow the United States to station the missiles in their territories. The United States has military bases in all three nations.
U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper told reporters in Asia over the weekend that he wants to deploy ground-launched missiles within months and stressed these weapons importance to the military theater in the Asia-Pacific region. Esper and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo both stressed that the goal of the deployment is deterrence.

Fu Cong?................
Who cares what this Fu Cong guy has to say. (Gotta love that name)!
I don’t think Star Wars 2.0 will
work on China.
Deploy them where? Guam? Australia has already said no and I don’t see Japan or South Korea agreeing to allow them in.
“Fu Cong”
Is he related to Hung Low?
Maybe, and Sum Ting Wong............
So what. We do what we deem appropriate and don’t ask permission from enemies. China can do the same.
“Is he related to Hung Low?”
Cousin of Hu Flu Poo
It appears that China would rather establish itself as a bully super power than stabilize its currency, trade fairly and cooperate internationally with the West... note the military islands emerging from the South China Sea; China said they would not be military.
China is playing a dangerous game - hoping to separate Europe and the US. The US could propose to delay deployment of the missiles if China could help to reign in NorKor... something like that.
Has it been officially reported what the submarine incident was with the Russians?
Esper is coming off of seven years as senior lobbyist for Raytheon.
Mmmmm...now who is it that builds missiles and missile defense systems?
Seems that President Trump has completely ceded control to the NeoCon nutjobs - Esper, Bolton, and Pompeo. Each of them never saw a war or occupation they didn’t love.
I like the “let’s end the expensive and endless wars overseas and bring our boys home” Trump better.
wha ?
If you really want to get Chinas attention, put the missiles in Taiwan
Why not? Just wondering about your reasoning.
I thought we destroyed all of the medium range missiles under the INF. Will we have to re-build the factories/tooling to restart production of the the Pershing II missile? Can we get the ground launched cruise missile and launcher production re-built and started?
We’re not presently in a cold war with China and the need for developing space based missile defenses. Outspending the Chinese on an arms race isn’t likely to be met with the results we saw with the USSR’s collapse from trying to keep up.
In a way, we’re in a cold war with much of the world...been going on for quite a while and Trump noticed and decided to do a bit of countering to their attacks....
The war that really scares me is in space. Glad PTrump is going there, I must admit.
