Bad Science Promoting Organic Apples

Are we eating apples wrong? An ABC news headline reads, “If you aren’t eating the whole apple, you might be eating it the wrong way, a study finds.” This reporting is based on this study, which is a comparison of the bacterial content of different parts of apples, and comparing organically grown to conventionally grown apples.

And don’t eat the apples seeds. They contain amygdalin, which is converted into cyanide with digestion. For an average weight person, you would have to eat about two cups of ground apples seeds for a fatal dose, but a smaller does can make you sick and cause symptoms like headaches.

So I could drink two cups of Round-Up and probably survive but if I eat two cups of apple seeds I would die. Go figure.

People all over the world eat apples with seeds and all, and have for a long time.

Yah, well ... I once liquified a couple of whole apples in one of those puree' machines and even with a little sugar, it tasted "woody" or something.

I too thought an entire apple might be a healthful thing, but if a spoonful of sugar doesn't make the medicine go down .... I don't want the cure.

Since the beginning of time. Perhaps they are concerned with the story of Eve (although an apple was not mentioned, eating the fruit had consequences).

Our rabbit eats our apple cores. We are happy to let him have all the health benefits.

If you read the article (!), you find the money paragraph and the author's bias:

In the end this is another poor study that doesn’t really show anything conclusive, but it is presented to promote a narrative, that organic produce is more healthful than conventional produce. Over half a century of research, however, has failed to demonstrate any clear health benefit to organic food, yet that is the number one reason people choose it and pay more for it.

If you click through to the underlying links, you find that organic food in fact has "fewer pesticide residues" but that's apparently not meaningful for the writer.

Now, I love big companies and capitalsim, but that doesn't mean there aren't some things I'd rather purchase from small businesses. I buy produce locally and my cows and steaks locally. To be sure, many firms selling organic food have been bought by large firms, and small firms aren't all beyond reproach. However, I personally have felt better and have had fewer health problems since switching to organics and local farmers whose cows I've met before they've become my steak.

Perhaps, the anti-organic crowd has an axe to grind with small "inefficient" businesses that MAY be leftish in their politics. Fair enough, though my locals tend to be more centrist or libertarian (they're certainly not vegans...) and I can always bypass outright hard left nutjobs. Indeed, I thought conservatives treated individuals as individuals and not as collectives. Furthermore, my experience with small food businesses is they are very responsive to customer input...try telling the Green Giant how you want your GMO corn prepared.

I know what works for me any my family. Organics have made a YUGE difference. It may also help other people. Ingesting chemicals isn't generally a good thing - "here's a nice cup of warm Round-Up" isn't someintng I want my barista to say.

#5: "DDT was banned in the US in 1972 but is still used in some places around the globe."

It's my understanding that DDT is easy enough to make at home by someone who can follow a recipe. However it is my understanding that one of the precursor chemicals is now a controlled substance (is it a narcotic????) which make it hard to obtain all the ingredients. I imagine if you lived in Mexico or somewhere like that, it would be easy to obtain all the ingredients.

There is a huge hole in your theory regarding “organic” vs treated fruit:

The vast majority of “organic” farms are surrounded by other, normal farms. While the “organic” farmer doesn’t spray his crops, he benefits from all his neighbors doing so, while he can claim saintliness.

“Organic” means more money than brains. YMMV.

....except that to be certified Organic, there are a series of tests that have to be undertaken on, inter alia, soil. So when Monsanto's hybrid seeds or the neighborhood agribusiness' use of Round-Up violates the organic farmer's property rights without compensation, the Organic farmer has to remediate that situation on his own dime to get the Organic cert.

I’m talking about FRUIT. The stuff that grows on trees.

Take a look at areas like the Okanogan valley in WA. Lots of apples and other tree fruit are grown there. Dozens of normal farms, interspersed with “organic orchards”.

The “organic” farms reap the benefits of the regular farms’ pest control efforts, and still label their product “organic”

The whole “organics” FAD is nothing but a scam to separate folks from their money.

Incidentally, you do know that a truncated definition of organic is: contains carbon.

It could be fruit, wheat, cows, or vegetables. The principle remains the same. If the organic farm owner doesn't want the non-organic farmer's pesticides on his property, if that happens it is a violation of property rights.

It is akin to your neighbor spray painting his home blue and some of the spray hitting your yellow home. Many people may comment favorably on your new speckled paint job. Others may think it increases the value of your home because it now stands out. Someone may tell you that some study points to blue paint leading to longevity and you should be happy about the favor your neighbor did for you.

However, you never WANTED a blue-speckled yellow home. It is YOUR HOME. None of those arguments matter because it is your property and what happened is a violation of property rights.

You may feel organic food is a scam, you may think people are stupid "throwing their money away" spending $5 on a gallon of milk just because free-range Elsie ate pesticide-free grass all her life. All well and good. But a cornerstone of classical liberalism is respect for property rights. That isn't up for debate.

Parenthetically, I suspect you wouldn't want some organic Benzene in your apple sauce.
