Trump calls for social media companies to ‘detect mass shooters before they strike’
The Verge ^ | 8/5/2019 | colin lecher

After two recent mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, President Trump said his administration would ask social media companies to develop tools that could detect potential mass shooters.

While delivering a speech on the recent violence, Trump said “we must do a better job of identifying and acting on early warning signs,” and he suggested social media companies could develop new ways of catching “red flags.”

“I am directing the Department of Justice to work in partnership with local state and federal agencies, as well as social media companies, to develop tools that can detect mass shooters before they strike,” Trump said in the speech.

While the president did not specify what those “tools” might look like, Trump seemed to be suggesting that companies could use predictive software to single out potential shooters based on their activity on a platform. Crucially, this would mean taking action before a person commits violent crimes. Data-mining tools are in wide use, but creating a detection system for violence would inevitably raise a host of privacy and accountability issues.

He won’t have much of a base if he actually follows through with the crap he’s babbling about today. Especially as we all watch the attempted coup perpetrators skate.

If this and the red flag law goes through, expect to see videos of people burning their MAGA hats.

You mean ban video games, while all the white people sit around feeling guilty for being white? Or maybe they can, you know, form a committee or something - once Congress gets back from their month-long vacation because, after all, they work so hard for the American people...

Even Hannity is utterly unlistenable today - just dribbling and ranting idiocy. I didn’t even both listening to Rush. I already know all I need to know about pillows, home movie transfers and security systems.

I guess this sort of thinking would extend monitoring to web and chat sites as well.

The real lesson here, is that the only way for “normal” people to effect national policy is to go on a rampage.

He’s referring to obvious cases where some mutant posts a manifesto online, explaining how he’s going to shoot up a WalMart...

That was more or less my take also.

What follows? knocking on doors for interrogation? No knock warrants searches? He is falling right into their trap lock stock and barrel. Everyone who even hints they might own a gun or that they dislike certain concepts will be considered a suspect of a crime that hasn’t happened yet if ever.

Agree.

There will come a breaking point with this stuff, and since it’s impossible to go back in time and provide the discipline and values that these kids needed 20 years ago, we’re faced wtih a Hobsons Choice: Either suffer through the consequences or try to find ways to deter some would-be mass killers before they act. (Note I didn’t say “pull the trigger” because we all know that knives, acid, bombs, cars, etc can equally lethal weapons).

Everyone agrees that these are learned behaviors, not one newborn baby is pre-programmed to become a mass murderer. So the challenge is to detect patterns early enough that intervention can be done, and the social media platforms are the best means possible to do that.

Monitoring gun purchases will just provide the names of millions of law-abiding citizens who are exercising their 2nd amendment rights.

Monitoring of comments and looking for trends on social media using AI and the same kind of algorithms that allow them to tell which purchase I’m likely to make next could provide some early detection. After all the “Grandma Story” that’s been posted on FR at least twice today is nothing more than a human doing pattern recognition and raising the alarm in time.

To those who say “Now I can’t support Trump” I say two things: #1, you never were a Trump supporter, and #2, you are an idiot.

He’s listening to that liberal idiot Ivanka.

What’s up with the Svengali-like influence she has over her father?

I voted for HIM, not for the likes of HER!

what the hell is he thinking?

He must be thinking that FakeBook and Google will conrinue to do a fine job at identifying conservatives as the enemy.

Good post. Thanks. After reading some of the comments here on FR today I honestly begin to wonder if the average Freeper even has an IQ of 90.

The Left will not support anything Trump ‘suggests’.
He dulls their issues by saying this kind of crap.

Trump is an incumbent politician facing an election. So he thinks he has to do something. Unfortunately there is very little that can be done to stop such nuts in a free society. We can do some things and piddle around the edges. But murder can’t be prevented.

This must be the plan the President supports.....

SOCIAL MEDIA ALGORITHMS..

White? Check.
Male? Check.

Uh-oh. Better report this individual to the State. He could mass murder anyone at any moment.
