"“when they know they will be jumped on not die and ultimately end up in prison for life” WHY SHOULD THEY NOT DIE! If I am in a crowd and somebody pulls a gun and starts randomly shooting, if I get the son of a bitch, he’s/she’s gonna die. IT’S CALLED SELF DEFENSE!"

Most of these shooters biggest fear is being caught alive and having to face the music. So if they believe they will be stopped before they can kill a bunch of people and not die in the process that is the deterrent. They won't attempt it. They will only attempt something where they believe the will be successful and they know how to accomplish.

We are far too focused on motive.

I can state the motive for mass shooters. THEY ARE NUT BAGS.

If we make mass shooting an ineffective means to terrorize people the nut bags will stop doing it.

The reality is when a shooter attacks a large crowd of people and the people surrender and run the shooter will win. If a large crowd of people attack a lone shooter the crowd will win every time.

Once the nut bags know THEY are going to be the ones attacked by a determined mob of people they will find something else to do.

BS. 31 soldiers died and another 39 were wounded. And easy for you to make a pronouncement from your living room. Those guys were in a unit that was wiped out by the same tribe 16 years before. It was freezing outside and they had been out in it for days. Everyone was exhausted and on a hair trigger when an Indian fired the orning shot.

Thank you for commenting FRiend and patriot!

Since this discussion would fall under the subject of sociology, please consider that in order for the subject to exist as a science we must deal in generalities. A single counter example, including your self good sir, really does not enter into it.

Of course because of this, some do not consider sociology a true science. Perhaps we can continue the discussion with this understanding. Sociology as a subject does not need the magic word science, we just all have to accept generalities as instructive.

We might discuss this “Columbine Theory” but the personal experiences of fine FReepers will not be instructive. You and others on this thread are unique in this society which is full of brutish animals who kill when they can get away with it.

The society has no significant population of children who are insulated from the violence of movies tv and video games so there can be no test for the theory. It can be established however, that people will look to blame something that they think they can control, and when that fails, they will look for something else.

Most of the casualties among the soldiers were from friendly fire.

The soldiers were there to DISARM the Lakota.

Sorry — I stand with the Injuns on this one.

IIRC there were a couple of incidents in the 80’s-90’s timeframe involving UPSP workers and facilities, hence the phrase “going postal”.

All of the interest in the beliefs of psychopath killers is just useless.

They are just plain nuts, and they are filled with rage.

Born that way, got that way, what ever......they are that way.

When we push back we just distract from that essential and commanding point.

They are and will always be, we’re better off making earthquakes illegal.

There's a "mass shooting" (or several) every weekend in Chicago ... and others is other cities.

Big Media doesn't bother reporting them. Why?

Because most of it is black on black, and reporting it truthfully would reflect badly on a "protected" class. But you already knew that.

Your probability of being targeted by a mass shooter is still about 1 in 10 million per year. My liberal mom who never goes out of the house but to a couple places in town doesn't realize that. She thinks she is next and all guns should be banned.

That is exactly what the media wants her to think.

This is a normal weekend in Chicago, IL.

Big Media ignores it.

That's funny.

A quick scan shows stories from Fox News, Politico, CNN, all of the Chicago newspapers, ABC, NBC, CBS and many lesser outlets.

Are you sure you're looking in the right places?

Even if the media reports it, most people ignore it. The difference between the problems in inner cities and mall and festival shootings is that most people, particularly the types that frequent Free Republic, know that if you don't go into the rough parts of town, you're unlikely to be personally affected. Malls and festival type events have generally been safe. It's difficult, if not impossible, to avoid stores and innocent events.

This also represents an expansion of violence into areas that weren't violent. That's different. It's news. Most people see inner city problems as being unsolvable. They might be, but IMHO, one large problem is that the solutions necessary will not be politically popular.

I think that's exactly right.

Our media, like our politicians, are a reflection of ourselves.

Blaming either for our problems is missing the point.
