On another terrible day, I hate to introduce even more pessimism, but when we discuss mass shootings, one of the first questions we ask is the simplest and also the hardest to answer. Why? Why does this keep happening? Those who advocate for gun control have an immediate answer the prevalence of guns in the United States. Yet guns have been part of the fabric of American life for the entire history of our republic. Mass shootings especially the most deadly mass shootings are a far more recent phenomenon.
Writing in 2015, Malcolm Gladwell wrote what I think is still the best explanation for modern American mass shootings, and its easily the least comforting. At the risk of oversimplifying a complex argument, essentially he argues that each mass shooting lowers the threshold for the next.

Big Media doesn't bother reporting them.
Why?
Big Media ignored it.
Two and one half hours later at 1800 S Kildare Chicago IL, seven more people were shot and one killed.
Big Media ignored it.
This is a normal weekend in Chicago, IL.
Big Media ignores it.
Why?
Now people who would have been patients in these institutions are made to live among the general population until they snap and something can then be done.
Great way to 'prevent' these type of events.
Yes, the writer has a reasonable point. But there’ may bemore to it...
Just suppose the leftie-commies want to grab all guns. What better way than to set up some of these appalling shootings , which are ALWAYS followed by people screaming to get rid of guns. ALWAYS blaming Republicans, Trump, and guns for slayings.
Especially when there’s a national election coming up. I can’t say that for sure, but we’re in the leadup to 2020 elections, and the nutcases are out in full force.
At least 250 people were killed -- most of them women and children.
The perpetrators were soldiers from the U.S. Army.
It was originally called The Battle of Wounded Knee, and the U.S. government even took the ridiculous step of awarding 20 of those soldiers the Medal of Honor.
They don't call it a "battle" anymore, because it wasn't much of a battle at all. It was an outright massacre.
Today, that event stands as a perfect example of WHY WE NEED THE SECOND AMENDMENT.
>> Why?
Black on black.
Trump Derangement Syndrome
Libtard Insanity Syndrome
Because it’s normal for Chicago. And mostly the crimes are black gangs on black gangs and not random murders.
This is a new phenomenon - in the recent past these acts would be considered cowardly, base - even unthinkable.
But today, we have more mental defects, prescribed drugs, recreational drugs, and no sense of duty or honor.
Because wrong color skin
Yep.
Black Lives DON’T Matter ... to the agenda driven left.
True. The destruction of the nuclear family has a lot to do with it. And the lack of a stay at home mom who raises the kids. We have lots of things that we didn’t have when I was a kid. Cable TV, Internet, a cell phone for each family member over 8, etc, requiring a 2 income household to maintain the lifestyle, leaving latchkey kids unsupervised several hours a day.
USE IT OR LOSE IT.
Supposedly pro-gun people in the US have let everyone down.
To talk big about supporting gun rights, but then to not carry EVERYWHERE, is a complete fail.
Thank you for nothing, do-nothing gun rights supporters.
You let us down every time a shooter is not stopped immediately.
Good yet disturbing post. As good as any theory I’ve heard.
Whole thesis is nonsense as violent crime has fallen significantly for over twenty-five years...probably due to the passage of ‘shall issue’ carry laws across 90% of the states. Violent crime reduction has been a huge success!
Study the numbers for yourself if you want to be informed:

I agree that violent crime overall has decreased, but mass shootings of unarmed targets for no good reason have increased significantly. How many mass shootings do you remember before Columbine?
To be truthful, Columbine was near the start of 24 hour news coverage on cable.
Excellent. Thanks for reminding me.
