Lowe’s Cos. told thousands of store workers this week their jobs were being eliminated as the company outsourced tasks such as assembling barbecue grills and janitorial services.

The home-improvement chain notified maintenance staff and assemblers that put together grills, wheelbarrows and other products that they were being laid off, according to the company and employees. Those roles will be taken over by third-party companies

A couple of years ago we bought a new riding mower from lowes with a 3 day delivery promise. We live 9 miles from the store.

After two weeks I picked it up myself after they refunded 20% of the price as a discount for their incompetence.

“Are you on drugs?”

**********

That’s a pretty nasty and unnecessary remark my FRiend. Whatever you say after hurling that kind of insult is often ignored.

50 years ago, assembling was a good and fun job for high school kids.

**************

50 years ago high school kids could read and write. And they looked forward to being a productive adults.

The assembly directions are probably above the comprehension levels of today’s typical high school graduate who are equally lacking in motivation to learn.

If we don’t want companies to outsource labor then we need to reduce the ridiculous number of laws, regulations and taxes imposed on hiring Americans.

But it's like shouting down a well. I've come to the conclusion there is so much resentment of "business" from conservatives (never mind liberals) - with zero differentiation between the effects of a law on Amazon vs. the effects on Joe's Flower Stand - that any meaningful legal reform will never happen.

I’ve had nothing but good service and respect from Lowe’s Brothers. I get the military discount and a thank you from the employees every visit.

I was in lowes yesterday, and I paid cash at the automated checkout, and they wanted my telephone number to complete the sale. I refused and it required a manager over-ride.

Years ago, I bought a $150 electronic device from a chain called American. The sales guy insisted on my phone number. I said, "No thank you, I don't give that out." He then told me to make one up. I told him to make one up if he wants. He wouldn't budge. They lost the sale.

They believe that nothing will happen to them, and, for the most part, they are right.

************

That’s pretty much true for nearly all criminals. They all have arrest records a mile long. The law is not a deterrent, just a slight inconvenience for them. Our society is a mess.

Drug use causes more liabilities, and insurers charge for liabilities.

You have put yourself on record for opposing reduction of potential for accidents.

“These stores are so enormous even the employees don’t know where everything is. Case in point, I spent almost an hour in both stores looking for those little pins that hold up the shelves in bookcases.”

NOT TRUE - At Lowes they made us learn where EVERYTHING was located. You must have gotten a newbie.

You are astute. But you can’t blame the government totally as they are one of the largest contributors to outsourcing in the country and are successful with it.

When I retired from the military and was approached to return to a position a lot like I left, this time in a civilian status, I crossed over into a true enigma of what most people understand as “military service.”

There were a total of 1.3 million active duty military and more than 800,000 reserve forces as of September 2017, according to Defense Department personnel data. But there were more than 142.5 million civilians working for the military in some type of capacity.

https://www.bls.gov/careeroutlook/2018/data-on-display/military-civilian-compare.htm?view_full

And that doesn’t include people working on the edge like congress and all their support. Everything from custodial to IT to decision making is in the middle and over/under the military. Even the POTUS is the overall commander in chief of the military, with checks and balance handed to congress.

So outsourcing is not new, just well hidden. And it’s been around for a long time.

They wanted the info off you DD214 to get that 10% discount.

All Home Depot requires is your Military ID. Same discount.

If the prices and variety of hardware were better at the Exchanges we might shop there more often. We go for our Scripts to a WW 2 walk in Pharmacy. That is not designed for Handicapped. There new Electronic Check in system that created chaos at the beginning of the year because the idiots didn’t put a coreman out there to show you how to use it, is now Broke has been for 3 months, and it may not get fixed till next year. So we are now down to 1 intake 1 out going script lines. If your doc E scripts your prescription in, there is NO one to answer the phone for you to authorize the prescription. FUBAR.

I received replacements for expiring credit cards, and instead of the old way of activating them by calling from my home phone they wanted me to use an app. I see no reason to connect my cellphone to my credit card for them (they’ve already got ways to do that); in small print it said you could visit their website for other ways to activate them. I tried to follow the steps (on a desktop PC, not my cellphone); don’t know if it worked (rarely use the card), but we’ll find out someday...

FAIL THE DRUG TEST is going to be a big problem in this country within 2 years or less.

In my area, I have found the exact opposite.

Lowe’s employees far more helpful than Home Depot.

People who assemble grills that are bought by customers are not going to live in other countries.

Those jobs will go to other companies, probably in small businesses, in the community.

The “help” at Lowe’s and Home Depot in our area is sporadic. Sometimes the people know what they’re talking about and are happy to assist. Sometimes they avoid looking customers in the eye and do their best to avoid you.

My 81 year old mother has neither desktop computer nor cell phone. Of course, she doesn't use credit cards, either.

Good for her!

She is a nightmare in this consumer-driven economy, but she’s no debt-slave!
