Ankara (AFP) - President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday laid the foundation stone for the first new church in Turkey since it became a modern republic in 1923.

The church in the Istanbul suburb of Yesilkoy will serve the 17,000-strong Syriac Christian community, which is also paying for the new building.

"It is the Turkish republic's duty to meet the need for space to worship for the Syriac community, who are the ancient children of this geography," Erdogan said during the stone-laying ceremony.

Gosh, why not just return Santa Sophia to the rightful owners?

I will agree with your opinion more when it is up for a year or so and not burned to the ground or people massacred in it one day.

Wrong country. With all the negative tendencies of late Turkey is still not that sort of country which burns down Churches.

I don’t know enough of their history to disagree with you so I will believe you and that is a good thing.

It just doesn’t make sense that the country and leader that bought SO MUCH oil from ISIS and effectively kept them going financially would have any qualms about killing Christians.

Financially supporting a group that Gleefully rapes and kills Christians and has NO PROBLEM burning down churches and THEN putting the first stone in place for one in your country is just odd.

But at the end of the day it’s a good thing.

But such paradoxes do exist in life.

“” “” It just doesn’t make sense that the country and leader that bought SO MUCH oil from ISIS and effectively kept them going financially would have any qualms about killing Christians.”” “”

I think it is mostly irony on your side considering the early role of CIA and Pentagon in ISIS.

Islamic Turkey be damned!! The Armenian Genocide was the Ottoman government's systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians, mostly Christians within the Ottoman Empire. Turkey was the center of the Ottoman Empire. To this day, the damned Turkish Muslims have not acknowledged let alone apologized for their extermination of Armenian Christians.

They will reap what they've sown. The Lord does not take lightly the blood of His saints.

Muslims, all Muslims are tools of the devil and the enemy of Christians. For a Christian to think otherwise is to deny 1387 years of history and the Koran's teaching and promoting the slavery and murder of Christians.

Apr 22, 2016 - TURKEY'S Islamist government has stepped up its war on Christianity by seizing all the churches in one city and declaring them state property.

A single church is mere propaganda. I doubt it will every be built to completion.

I disagree. I expect St. Potemkin's will be completed.
