Trump's racism is an impeachable offense. The precedent of Andrew Johnson proves it.
NBC News ^ | July 30, 2019 | Peter Irons

He attempted “to bring into disgrace, ridicule, hatred, contempt and reproach the Congress of the United States.” He delivered “with a loud voice, intemperate, inflammatory, and scandalous harangues, and has uttered loud threats and bitter menaces, against Congress [and] the laws of the United States, amid the cries, jeers and laughter of the multitudes.”

He has brought the “high office of the President of the United States into contempt, ridicule and disgrace.”

Sound like someone we all know? These charges certainly describe President Donald Trump’s deplorable behavior and its effects on Congress, the presidency, and — most importantly — the divisions he has exploited and widened among the American people, as well as the damage he has caused to America’s standing and role in the world community.

But they aren’t an imaginary list of offenses compiled by Congress to hold Trump accountable for his transgressions; they are actual excerpts from Article 10, the most important of the 11 impeachment articles brought by Congress against an earlier president: Andrew Johnson.

If I’m not mistaken, Andrew Johnson was acquitted. If they want to use this as a model going forward I’d say “take your best shot”.

Anything can be an impeachable offense; the question is wholly political.

But really, “impeachment” is just a dog whistle for the Left’s continued refusal to accept the results of the last election.

Problem: Andrew Johnson was impeached, but acquitted. Oh, and the little problem that Johnson directly and deliberately violated the Tenure of Office Act, which prohibited Johnson from firing the Attorney General. Oh, and Johnson was acquitted.

Triple down on him and his family in 2025, unless he takes down our domestic enemies hard, soon.

Anything you make up is an impeachable offense if you have the guts to impeach. It’s a political action, not a legal action.

No he wasn’t Andrew Johnson, along with Abraham Lincoln ran together on the National Union Party Ticket.

More to the point, Johnson not only fired his Attorney General who refused to obey what he considered to be illegal directives, but Congress had specifically over-rode his veto of legislation to prevent Johnson from firing his Attorney General.

There is legal debate about whether Congress had such authority, but Congress, the Supreme Court and the Attorney General were united in their opinion of this in opposition to the President and by a super-majority. In general, the Constitution grants the President power to refuse Congress (”veto” means, “I refuse.”), but also gives Congress the power to over-ride such a determination and to impeach the President.

So, even if you believe legislative review is a power the Founders never intended to give the judiciary, and instead reserves that power to the President through his use of the veto, you still have to recognize that the Constitution reserves to Congress the right to over-ride such a veto and to remove the President.
