A missile launcher was found in a mans checked luggage at the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport Monday morning, Transportation Security Administration officers said.
TSA officials said they tracked down the traveler and detained him for questions, according to WBAL. The man, a resident of Jacksonville, Texas, told TSA officials that he is an active military member and was traveling home from Kuwait. He told the officers that he wanted to keep the launcher as a souvenir.
TSA says military weapons are not permitted in checked or carry-on luggage and the item was confiscated and handed over to the state fire marshal for safe disposal. The launcher was not a live device, TSA officials said.
The man was able to catch his flight.

LOL - It is essentially a HOLLOW TUBE and certainly not dangerous.
An empty tube basically.
Does that prohibition include carryon luggage? /#confounded
“I have a permit for that.”
What’s his FReeper handle?
Was he happy to see them?
Could you imagine if he had an even more deadly section of PVC?
They are right to confiscate it.
By itself it may be “inactive” but without first collecting the item and doing a security check on the passenger they do not know if he was/is acting in concert with any associates who had somehow managed to disquise parts that could make it active in someway.
I think the guy was an idiot to think it would get past security. He must of been couning on TSA making one of the many mistakes they make, and letting it through by merely ignoring it.
FTA: “TSA says military weapons are not permitted in checked or carry-on luggage...”
So, and expended launcher is a “military weapon”?
“that’s not a missile launcher, that’s my sex toy!”
I earned a Article-15 just for having a couple of M-16 shell casings in my barracks locker. Guess this would be a little more serious.
I remember when the airport x-ray found a box of 5.56mm M200 blanks that I forgot to take out of my bag after a field problem. I think I had boarded at least 3 flights with those blanks in my carry-on before that. I left the security officer holding the handful of blanks and continued onto the plane. This was all pre-9/11 and pre-TSA.
A few boxes made it to my parents’ house. You’d be amazed how loud they were in my dad’s .223 Thompson Contender.
> I have a permit for that.
That’s what I told her...
:)
Even if it was effectively a highly decorated piece of PVC pipe, it was still military refuse spirited off of either a battlefield or a training range. His command either allowed it or didn’t allow it and if they aren’t “cool” with walking off post with military property, he could be spending a lot of time with a push broom for the rest of his deployment when he returns. Since it made national news, it’s unlikely that it will escape his unit’s notice.
Has the TSA EVER caught a terrorist? I don’t believe so. Mainly, I think they hassle Citizens. Their deterrence is an illusion. Government control is the intent.
