Irish Prime Minister Threatens Boris With UK Break Up in No Deal Brexit

Brexit

London (AFP) – A no-deal Brexit could lead to a united Ireland as more people in Northern Ireland would “come to question the Union” with Great Britain, Irish prime minister Leo Varadkar has said.

His comments came after new British prime minister Boris Johnson said the current Brexit deal was unacceptable and set preparations for leaving the EU without an agreement as a “top priority” for his right-wing government.

Tension around the withdrawal deal centres on the so-called Irish backstop — a mechanism designed to keep Northern Ireland in the bloc’s Single Market and prevent a customs border between it and EU member the Republic of Ireland.

Varadkar warned a no-deal Brexit could see more people in Northern Ireland question the Union with England, Scotland, and Wales.

“People who you might describe as moderate nationalists or moderate Catholics who were more or less happy with the status quo will look more towards a united Ireland,” Varadkar said Friday at a summer school in county Donegal, the Irish Independent newspaper and other media reported.

The UK can easily check-mate the EU on the whole “backstop.”

Simply declare Northern Ireland a free trade zone. No duties on goods brought in or out. The UK still has a sea border, so can easily watch goods coming in and out the rest of the UK. The Northern Irish will love it because they will become rich.

That also means that Ireland itself becomes a free trade zone unless they are the ones to impose a hard border. That means those goods also flow into the EU

What’s the EU’s position on the backstop at that point?

The “backstop” is a fantasy anyway. Northern Ireland is NOT a separate country from Ireland, and is part of the UK.

Any process they wish to go through to leave Ireland is separate from Brexit.

Varadkar’s suggestion is a pipe dream. Northern Ireland might leave the UK, but the Orangemen won’t join Ireland. Scarlet whore of Rome and all that. And Ireland doesn’t have the military power to force the issue.

Well, since the PM of Ireland is a gay man from India, he may be a little short on the nuances of interfering in the internal affairs of other nations.

But the only thing the 26 county State will ever reunite with is the UK.

The whole purpose of the EU, from Ireland’s perspective, was an effective reunion with GB without having to declare it.

Exactly right. More likely Ulster will take over the South. There are tens of thousands of Ian Paisly’s for every Michael Collins.

It looks like the Irish PM prefers to be a part of mainland Europe instead of Uniting with the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom.... good luck with that ( immigration policy controlled by bureaucrats in Brussels ).

A LOOK AT LEO VARADKAR’s BACKGROUND:

Leo Eric Varadkar (born 18 January 1979) is an Irish Fine Gael politician who has served as Taoiseach, Minister for Defence and Leader of Fine Gael since June 2017. He has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Dublin West constituency since 2007. He previously served as Minister for Social Protection from 2016 to 2017, Minister for Health from 2014 to 2016 and Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport from 2011 to 2014.

He was 38 years old on his election as Taoiseach, becoming the youngest person to hold the office.
During the 2015 same-sex marriage referendum, he came out as gay – the first Irish government Minister to do so. He is Ireland’s first, and the world’s fourth, openly gay head of government in modern times. He is also the first Irish government leader of Indian heritage.

Varadkar was born in Dublin and studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin. He spent several years as a non-consultant hospital doctor before qualifying as a general practitioner in 2010. In 2004, he was co-opted onto Fingal County Council and served as deputy mayor, before his election to Dáil Éireann in 2007.

Varadkar is the third child and only son of Ashok and Miriam (née Howell) Varadkar. His father was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s, to work as a doctor.

Varadkar’s parents agreed to raise their son, born to a Hindu father and a Catholic mother, in the Catholic faith.

Irelands largest annual increase in the population since 2008, brought the population estimate to 4.86 million in April 2018. “In the year to April 2018, Irish nationals accounted for 28,400 (31.5%) of the 90,300 immigrants to Ireland and 28,300 (50.3%) of the 56,300 emigrants from Ireland...Aug 28, 2018

Ireland cannot support it’s welfare immigrant population without the UK....Almost every person in Ireland benefits, directly or indirectly, from some form of social welfare.

“There are tens of thousands of Ian Paisly’s for every Michael Collins.”

There’s this thing called Math. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

Catholic Population of Northern Ireland = 738,033 (as of 2011).
Protestant Population of Northern Ireland = 752,555 (as of 2011).

I didn’t even bother adding in the Catholics of Southern Ireland.

No.

The EU is NOT a free trade agreement. The EU is a customs union. Inside, no borders. Outside, a common border.

Customs unions can be either trade-increasing or trade-diverting. It depends on the common outside border. With a high border tax, it diverts trade from the rest of the world to within itself.

Don’t be fooled:

China (a communist country) is NOT pro-free trade.

The EU (with its customs union) is NOT pro-free trade.

The UK, an island nation, should be a pro-free trade nation. So too the US, a giant, continent-wide country, being as we have faces to both the Atlantic and the Pacific. Ditto Canada and Mexico. Also Australia and New Zealand and Japan.

We have FTAs with many countries for which free trade makes sense for both them and us, and we’re in negotiations with Japan. We should be able to negotiate an FTA with the UK.

Here’s the important thing: we should use our great size to break down the EU border and other similar borders based on “reciprocity,” just as Trump says we should.

And, we need to revise our FTAs, e.g., NAFTA, now USCMA, to prevent non-free trade countries like China from sneaking product into our country through our partner countries.

This policy is totally consistent with being a Christian and with being an American.

#1 - our relationship with God
#2 - our relationship with our family
#3 - our relationship with our fellow countrymen (Trump says this comes first, but he is speaking as our President)
#4 - our relationship with out military allies and trade partners (just trust me on this, these tend to be the same)
#5 - our relationship with all the people of the world

We’re not isolationists. But we are pragmatic. We have a plan for everybody. But we have to be patient.
