Johnson tells EU: ditch backstop or face no-deal Brexit
Reuters ^ | 07/27/2019 | William James

Johnson, since taking office on Wednesday, has repeatedly said that if the EU continues to refuse to renegotiate the Withdrawal Agreement agreed by his predecessor Theresa May, then he will take Britain out on Oct. 31 without a deal.

His biggest demand is that the most hotly-contested element of the Brexit divorce agreement, the Irish border backstop, be struck out of the Withdrawal Agreement, a demand that has angered Ireland and perturbed other EU capitals.

Speaking before a Stephenson’s Rocket, a 19th century steam locomotive, in the northern England city of Manchester, Johnson dedicated most of his speech to improving public services, transport and the internet and driving up economic growth.

The backstop is an insurance policy designed to prevent the return of border controls along the 500-km (300-mile) land border between Ireland and Britain’s province of Northern Ireland that were ended by the 1998 Good Friday peace agreement.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar said the question of the unification of Ireland and Northern Ireland would inevitably arise if Britain leaves the EU without a divorce deal on Oct. 31.

The Withdrawal Agreement that May struck in November with the EU says the United Kingdom will remain in a customs union “unless and until” alternative arrangements are found to avoid a hard border.

Many British lawmakers oppose the prospect of being bound to EU rules and customs duties that would prevent Britain doing its own trade deals and leave it overseen by EU judges.

Boris should return Northern Ireland back to Ireland. Britain has no business occupying any territory in Ireland. Whether Ireland wants to stupidly stay in the EU or not is not Britain’s concern.

It would be sad if Ireland was uniofied only after it got ruined.

The U.K. will have to hold off on anything regarding Northern Ireland until AFTER Brexit is executed. It would be wrong for people to hold Brexit responsible for any change in status.

Return?

It’s been loyal to England since the Battle of the Boyne, and officially part of the UK for 100 years.

I think it had more to do with Northern Ireland wanting to be linked to Britain(protestants).

I don't know about today.

Did it ever occur to you that the British subjects living in Northern Ireland have a right to be consulted in the matter? Northern Ireland’s history and demographics have been distinctive since the Viking era. Its special status is not arbitrary. The rest of Ireland has progressed far enough on multiple fronts that Irish unification would be easier today than a generation or two ago, but my guess is that Northern Ireland would still vote by a wide margin to remain within the UK.

You have correctly stated the solution. Remove Northern Ireland from the United Kingdom

What does Northern Ireland contribute beyond trouble, strife, grief and chauffers? (Downon Abby Reference there)

That won’t happen, of course. But I agree with you. The UK keeping Northern Ireland would be like the UK keeping New York after the Revolution ended. It just doesn’t make sense.

Side note: I picked New York because that colony had many loyalists.

So? It was even longer back a loyal part of Ireland. It belongs to Ireland. Those residents that prefer England can surely move there. Ireland has a longer claim on their island. No matter how you view it, the UK is an occupier.

New York is presently a Loyalist state. New York longs to be like the UK

No liberal politician from New York has ever had an idea that did not mimic the UK

Yes, Iknow, I know there is red on the map. Doesn’t matter the red is powerless and in effect accepts the loyalist thought to the point of being loyalist

... or like England keeping Canada after the Revolution.

They actually ought to put it to a vote. Let Northern Ireland decide: are you EU or UK?

But no American of that time considered Canada to be connected to the 13 colonies. On the other hand, Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic obviously have many strong connections, not the least of which is that they share the same small island.

Canada did not rebell and sadly they were not included in the American revolution. Wouldn’t it be great to revisit that and add them to the 13 colonies? We could have a united North American under the US flag. Probably should anyway as Canada is very dependent upon the US for everything, virtually part of the US.

Let’s go back to 1783. The American Revolution has just ended. Should the Founders have allowed each state to vote whether to join the United States or stay in the UK?

Northern Ireland should decide what is best for them - a terminally ill Ireland or no Brexit England.

The ultimate issue with N Ireland is, and will be, Catholic vs Protestant.

Just do a search on the marching season and the unrest it causes.

BTW, walls work. They have them in N Ireland to separate the Catholic neighborhoods from the Protestant, AND they close the gates into some of those areas at night, or at least used to.

The place is..I cant explain it.

Article XI.
Canada acceding to this confederation, and joining in the measures of the united states, shall be admitted into, and entitled to all the advantages of this union: but no other colony shall be admitted into the same, unless such admission be agreed to by nine states.

Articles of Confederation.
