Al Franken regrets resigning from Senate over sexual misconduct scandal
NY Post ^ | July 22, 2019 | 1:16pm | Bob Fredericks

Former Sen. Al Franken says he “absolutely” regrets his December 2017 resignation over a sexual misconduct scandal — and some of the senators who’d pressed him to quit are also questioning their actions.

“I can’t go anywhere without people reminding me of this, usually with some version of ‘You shouldn’t have resigned,’” Franken, the former “Saturday Night Live” funnyman-turned-politician, said in a lengthy look back at the incident in The New Yorker.

“Yup,” was his usual reply, he told the magazine.

Pressed on whether he means it, he adds: “Oh, yeah. Absolutely.”

Leeann Tweeden, a conservative talk-radio host, had accused Franken of having forced an unwanted kiss on her during a 2006 USO tour, and several other women came forward with lurid tales of the Democrat forcibly kissing or fondling them.

As the #MeToo movement was gaining steam, several senators quickly called for Franken’s head, including New York’s Kirsten Gillibrand, now seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, who does not regret her calls for him to quit.

But others do, including Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who told the magazine his decision to oust Franken without a thorough investigation was “one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made” in his Senate career.

Hear hear! From what I’ve learned about the “leaders” in Minnisoe-ta, they probably cheered his vote rigging!

Franken was a despicable person through and through. Several times he made fun of people with disabilities and his staff had to restrain him. He is just a thoroughly awful man. He must have been horrible to work with.

The few times I saw him perform as an actor, I was mystified as to why what he did was “entertaining.” I suppose it is like the time I got satellite service so I could listen to “comedy” stations. After a short time, I canceled. Hour after hour of making fun of good people and cursing is not entertaining. They weren’t funny.

There’s an easy fix for this, Al. Run for your old Senate seat again. Or run for some other elective office. If you really regret it, run for office and let the voters decide.

Agree with all you said, but a minor point: I think she was a media person, not in the military.

The stupidity and insulting behavior does not change in degree or importance regardless of her job.

The dems cheated (stuffed the voter boxes) him into office in the first place. He did the right thing by resigning.

I know that but Al Freakin’ Franken ???

It wasn’t even funny on SNL!

An out of date jar of Lutefisk would have been a better senator! Hubert Humphrey’s state party couldn’t do better then that?

He either didn't know, or he forgot the Larry Craig precedent.

Perversion is a plus in Congress.

Clearly (and on camera) Trump’s done worse, so he has a point. But he is the smarmiest, most egotistical, Napoleon-complex schmuck I’ve ever met. I was sad he was ever a senator.

I met him when he was in charge on a movie set. Omg, he set a new low for the definition of a-hole.

Franken, Epstein, Weinstein, Wexner, Weiner, Moonves, Woody Allen, Geffen, Singer, etc etc, on one side of the perv/pedo ledger.

Bill Clinton on the other side.

Quite an imbalance I must say.

Holding his head in his hands, he said, “I don’t think people who have been sexually assaulted, and those kinds of things, want to hear from people who have been #MeToo’d that they’re victims.” Yet, he added, being on the losing side of the #MeToo movement, which he fervently supports, has led him to spend time thinking about such matters as due process, proportionality of punishment, and the consequences of Internet-fuelled outrage. He told me that his therapist had likened his experience to “what happens when primates are shunned and humiliated by the rest of the other primates.” Their reaction, Franken said, with a mirthless laugh, “is ‘I’m going to die alone in the jungle.’ ”

Franken was stricken when I related her comments to him. “Look,” he said. “This has really affected my family. I loved being in the Senate. I loved my staff—we had fun and we got good things done, big and small, and they all meant something to me.” He started to cry. “For her to say that, it’s just so callous. It’s just so wrong.” Rubbing his eyes beneath his glasses, he said, “I ended my career by saying ‘Thanks’ to her—that’s what she’s saying.”

The point of him resigning was to try to ignite momentum to pressure Trump out over #MeToo bs.

It was a high stakes gamble and he lost big. Now afterwards he realizes why Senators don’t let go of their seats without one hell of a fight.
