As the Army, Navy and other services contend with a thriving economy and a directive to expand their ranks, there is a growing debate over whether the military should consider lowering the minimum enlistment age from 17 to 16. More than a dozen countries, including the United Kingdom, already have adopted the policy.
Critics say the idea is deeply flawed and presents a host of societal problems, but supporters argue that the Pentagon needs to think outside the box if it wants to continually overcome one of the toughest recruiting environments in decades.

If using the asvab as a determinant remove the HS diploma requirement and use the asvab to restrict eligibility. Some 16 yo can be quite intelligent. Also wouldn’t hurt to make the military be the military again. I see more machismo in high school sport teams. Why enlist to serve with a bunch of pajama boys?
Also I enlisted at 17, graduated high school then went to Navy boot camp. Stayed 20 years. I was a recruiter and boot camp drill instructor So I got to see both ends of the equation. Some very smart college grads were boxes of rocks and some non grads were excellent sailors

Of course it came at a cost and I have the deepest respect for those who have defended it, however if a nation’s population is not sufficiently motivated to join to defend it then there might be a problem with what we are fighting for, therefore I believe conscription is akin to slavery
If the US had not drafted men and fought WW1 then ww2 might have never happened, the USSR might have never existed, etc.
And as an FYI I’m well past the age limit to join the military but if the cause was just and the need existed I would find a way before supporting a draft
And to add...I’ve paid enough income taxes over the years to pay for far a lot of training, equipment, and manpower
