GateHouse Media and its publicly traded publisher New Media Investment Group is deep in talks to buy USA Today owner Gannett a merger that would make Americas biggest newspaper chain even bigger, The Post has learned.
The two parties had been previously reported to be in talks, but it was unclear until now that the deal was for the smaller Gatehouse to buy Gannett, which is already the biggest newspaper chain in the US by circulation.
Fairport, NY-based GateHouse which owns nearly 700 papers across 39 states, including 156 dailies like the Columbus Dispatch in Ohio is owned by Fortress Investment Group, a hedge fund controlled by business tycoon Wesley Edens.
Theres about a 75 percent chance it happens, a source close to the deal said. The two sides thought they were close to a deal earlier this month, the source said.
But another source insisted there are still hurdles to be cleared. Theres nothing imminent, the source said.

He appears to be a Democrat......................
A fool and their money are soon parted.
I contacted Gatway media which handles my local paper and they said they would print in in its entirety .
Then I got an e- mail asking if they could print it in their other Mass. local papers. I said of course since it is relevant to all coastal New England papers.
I did some checking and found out Gateway Media have 50 different Newspapers in Mass., and many others around the country.
So far I have seen my article in 18 Mass. newspapers , it probably is in more, and will probably be in others as the summer goes on.
Gateway is a big outfit-Tom
Congratulations on your success!..................
Excellent! Congrats...
Thanks for the report.
In related news the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is cutting down to publishing three days per week.
And the Youngstown Vindicator is going away altogether next month.
Our local paper isn’t even printed here any more. It’s printed 60 miles away at their sister paper in Panama City and trucked here during the night. Needless to say, the ‘news’ is old by the time it gets here..............
A Hillary supporter. Too many news outlets owned by one person is bad
why, it's utterly useless! we have two of them within 30 miles of each other and there's not a lick of difference in them except a few adds, the rest is leftist agitprop
