Shortened title.

Full title: Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announces seizure of oil tanker accused of smuggling fuel in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has seized a foreign tanker and 12 crew members accused of smuggling Iranian fuel, according to a report on Iran’s state television Thursday.

The seizure is the latest in a series of attacks involving ships and tankers, mostly in the vicinity of the Persian Gulf, that have sent tensions soaring between the United States and Iran.

The television report said the tanker was delivering about 1 million liters of Iranian fuel from Iranian smugglers to foreign clients. The tanker was detained Sunday, the report said, near Iran’s Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic waterway through which much of the world’s traded oil is transported.

No, no, Achmed!

The plan was to ALLOW the tanker to go through the straits and blame it on the “smugglers”.

Now? We just look stupid.

The price of oil has barely budged. It is down about 3.5% from a few days ago. At present it’s $64.6 per barrel. That’s about 9-10 down from its high last year when nothing was going on at all. The markets are still confident that there is no immediate, or even future, threat of all out war in the region. (Ouilprice.com)

Interesting. From articles I’ve read, the Iranian regime is desperate to get the sanctions lifted. Inflation, according to one article, was 50% for general items and 80% for food. I have no idea over what period they were talking about.

It sounds like the Iranians seized an Iranian ship carrying Iranian oil owned by a group of Iranians.

If that was meant as a show of force, it’s lost on me.

Permission granted! We need target practice! It would be interesting how few of our ships it would take to make that happen!

Big picture time. Iran has damaged a number of oil tankers in that part of the world in the past couple months. They got caught by the Brit's trying to ship oil that is banded by international sanctions to Syrian interests.

So what is this all about? An attempt at plausible deniability.

Iran needs EU members to not adopt US sanctions. So far it isn't working. Go Trump.

Iran needs to convince those EU countries that they need to back the poorly drafted anti-nuclear expansion plan which required them to drop sanctions against Iran.

This is an attempt for the EU members to say “look Iran is a responsible country, they are fighting independent smugglers who are giving the Iranian government a bad name.”

Iran has a huge economic problem that is going to cause a change in government, unless the sanctions are lifted. The leaders of Iran are fighting for their lives, literally.

Iran is the only country that would need to smuggle fuel.

Sounds like Liberals in this country, some hoodlums in Iran pirated some oil that The Mullahs were counting on to buy some children or other mischief and they were going to lose money.

Iranians busting other Iranians

Nothing to see here

You can't make this up.

I am curious as to how the Bolshies are going to blame this on Trump.

6,300 bbl. does not much of a tanker make. Could be a small vessel, perhaps 200 to 250 feet. Something that size could run in water too shallow for a deep draft vessel to reach the dock, thus provide lighterage.
