Alaska and Amazon vie to hire 2,200 to be freed under Trump prison reform
Washington Examiner ^ | July 12, 2019

President Trump's criminal justice reform law will release some 2,200 federal inmates next week, and reform supporters are finding broad interest among employers, including Alaska's seafood industry and retail giant Amazon.

An effort to line up employment, guided by evidence it reduces recidivism, features job fairs and prison advertising ahead of a mass release July 19. Inmates gaining jobs could help provide political cover for Trump after some Republican senators and law enforcement groups said reforms would endanger public safety.

A leading work option is emerging in Alaska, where thousands of people may be hooked up with seasonal work thanks to a chance White House meeting between Alaska labor commissioner Tamika Ledbetter and ex-inmate turned activist Angela Stanton.

Alaska fishing industry is hard work.
I don’t think any of these ex-cons want to work that hard.

So people who’ve obeyed the laws and can’t find a job are put aside for those who’ve been in prison and are promised a job? Justice?

I always keep hearing about getting jobs for released inmates when there are law abiding citizens who can’t find work.

A bud of mine signed on to work in the Alaska fishing industry. He didn't mind the hard work and the money was great. During the off-season, he collected a generous unemployment check from the State of Alaska.

The best part of all was avoiding alimony payments to a greedy ex- Her lawyer would go through a lot of work to contact the vessel he was on and he would simply laugh and say "come and get me."

According to him, there were lot of men working the fleets in similar situations and they looked out for each other.

Alaska fishing, especially for crabs, pays a ridiculous amount of money. People line up fast for the work despite the dangers.

For that kind of pay, a former inmate looking for a fresh start at life might be well motivated to work despite the demanding labor and inherent risk.

The unemployment rate is at record lows. In some areas it is less than 2%.

Sounds like Tamika is trying to increase the black population of Alaska.

The best tool against recidivism is a good job.

If they *DO* and are trying to turn things around, God bless ‘em. The best thing that they could do - work hard, make good money, get a fresh start.

Sure there will be some thieves and losers; I have a feeling the kind of justice that gets dispensed towards those types will be swift and effective.

Either you believe people can turn their life around, or you don’t.

Keep records on this prison reform experiment...

How many ex-cons take jobs and have those jobs two years later (Please Amazon - for success offer ‘culture training’ - a “here's life's rules” month long class - a sane start...).

What percentage of ex-cons take the easy route to ‘disablilty’ (an updated form of welfare)...

Percentage of ex-cons who commit crimes within the first two years...

How many ex-cons are back in prison within two years?

First the numbers, the truth, then a strong analysis to find out what works and what incentives have to be switched.

Delivery and handling of product by felons and others swept up in the criminal system and now looking for new lines of work.

Brilliant!!

Letting them profit before illegals and malcontents. Even better.

Strange headline,
It could be read as Alaska and Amazon area of Brazil?? Which is better than Amazon Corp. and Alaska Airlines. Apples and oranges linked together.

Or they’re simply looking for hard workers for physically demanding tasks.

I once worked for a plastics recycler in an office role. I was warned NOT to be alone around shift change or work late.

The company had 12 hour physically demanding shifts. The local parole officers sent sex offenders there to work because you were on shift 6-6. Essentially, you’re there before kids leave for school and in theory return home too tired to do anything. And being an industrial facility in an industrial area, there were NO children or schools, so it was one of the jobs these people could hold.

You just didn’t want to be a young woman going out to your car at 6 PM in case a paroled rapist might do anything.

Given the choice of prison and working in Alaska ...

“Well?”
“I’m thinking it over.”

How many have a history of credit card theft as well as drugs? Just one more in a thousand reasons not to use Amazon.
