President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will take executive action to direct the Department of Commerce to obtain an estimate of U.S. citizens from records provided by federal government agencies.
Today, I am here to say we are not backing down on our effort to determine the citizenship status of the United States population, the president stated in the Rose Garden of the White House with Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Attorney General William Barr by his side.
We will leave no stone unturned, the president added.
President Trump had previously said an executive action was one of multiple options he was considering in regards to adding the question after the Supreme Court ruled against it on procedural grounds.
Were thinking about doing that. Its one of the ways. We have four or five ways we can do it. Were doing well on the Census, the president old reports last week when asked about the question.
I have a lot of respect for Justice Roberts, but he didnt like it, he added. But he did say come back. Essentially he said, come back. Thats what he was saying. So well see what happens. We can also add an addendum on so we can start the printing now and maybe do an addendum after we get a positive decision.
The high court said the administration did not provide adequate grounds for adding the question and called the governments argument contrived. The Census Bureau has since begun printing the questionnaires without the inquiry about U.S. citizenship.
Two federal judges have also since blocked administration efforts to change Justice Department attorneys who had been fighting in court for the questions inclusion.
The Justice Department initially said the fight to add the question was over, before President Trump intervened and said he

Because it is a Constitutional requirement?
Three sources all suffering from TDS.
There appears to be a misconception on how the citizenship information is used. In almost every voting rights and redistricting cases I have read, (at the circuit court level, trial court level), there is a fight over the voting age population, (VAP), numbers. The only citizenship information available to date is the ACS survey which goes out to around one in six households and then is extrapolated to determine the VAP for the district in litigation. The trial court fight frequently is over the accuracy of this information. Using a combined data bases from all government agencies the DOJ will have a better picture of what the actual VAP is. Dems don’t want there to be an accurate count because they would then lose many of these cases.
If it’s full of lies, then it is not valid.
Thank you for your informed and rational comment.
He is not a dictator.
We elected a president when in fact many people wanted a revolution.
Those are very, very different things...led by very, very different people.
Trump is a diplomat, negotiator, dealer...his is the art of compromise, of win-win.
That is something very different than someone who will fight and kill ruthlessly - even for right and truth - to the last drop of blood. What many of these folk here want is the bloodletting of a massive revolution not the compromise and give and take - and retreat at times - of politics.
Trump is one thing...and they want another...even if it means destruction and chaos.
Or look at your car insurance bill. Do you pay for uninsured motorist coverage? Is the premium acceptable to you? If so, you must not live anywhere near a border town.
Are you happy about billions in your tax dollars per annum being pissed away on people who broke into the country while our veterans sleep in the streets?
According to dems, youre not spending anywhere near enough on these future lifelong dem voters who must be used to ensure a permanent dem majority.
The purpose of the census is to determine how government resources (aka wealth redistribution) are to be allocated.
Welcome my friend. This is why the Voting Rights section of the DOJ would like to have the citizenship question on the census. PDJT is doing a work around on this. I hope that the IRS and SSA data is merged in this endeavor and then the issue of false/stolen SSN’s will become better known. If that happens then PDJT could order the IRS to deny tax refunds on any filing that has a fraudulent/stolen SSN until the discrepancy is resolved. That will identify millions of illegals and other crooks using fraudulent/stolen SSN’s. Also, using HHS data and Medicare data will also reveal major fraud.
I expect that the Dems will argue in court that the data will be misused for law enforcement purpose and that the administration must be stopped from collecting the data. It will be popcorn time. LOL
Saying that we're going to try to consolidate existing databases across the government is doubling down?
Looking for illegals, just go to WalMart on payday and see them lined up sending money back to Mexico and other countries.
Really? Getting the question on a ‘census” that takes place every 10 years, and which folks will be coached to hide the truth, is useless...this is a much more reliable set of sources for the data and can be an on-going “finger on the pulse”...
Yale Professor: People Lived Better in Soviet Union than Under Donald Trump
She is that professor.
Neither you nor I is a member of the administration that has the knowledge or authority to decide what is the next step.
I guess you think you’d make better decisions than Trump.
Thank you for the additional.
It seems as though there are very few adults in this room....
What I think wasn’t the question, the question was ‘doesn’t the Constitution require require that the results of the Census be used for apportionment’.
You don’t want to answer that because it undermines the point you’re trying to make.
If the census numbers are wrong, they can be adjusted by truthful figures.
Whose side are you on, anyway?
Some people are afraid to debate ideas or answer direct questions.
You appear to fall in that category.
I was one of the earliest Freepers to support Trump, 2011, and still do.

I am not afraid to debate or answer direct questions. I know my limitations on this topic, and you, apparently, do not know yours.
They must make a handsome profit. I wonder what Western Union charges.
