Tropical Storm Barry!
NHC/NOAA ^ | 07/11/2019 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 07/11/2019 8:20:54 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Tropical storm Barry has finally earned its name. The storm is drifting W in the central Gulf of Mexico. The tropical system is somewhat unusual because the low pressure system was originally over Georgia before drifting into the GOM.

The New Orleans area has been inundated with heavy rain with flooding over the past several days, unrelated to the current tropical storm.

What’s worse (if possible) is that once this thing moves inland, it’s gonna dump billions of gallons more onto the the lower Mississippi basin ... and probably follow the river all the way to Southern Illinois.

So the run-off will continue to stress the levees for at least another week after landfall.

This storm is acting more and more like Alicia and so does the forecasting .If it moves any slower it could intensify significantly. During Alicia it was touted as a minimal storm and just a big rain event and we know how that turned out.

There’s a trip down the memory hole. August 1983 Hurricane Alicia. Bad storm in the Galveston/Houston area. 12ft storm surge, Category 3 winds and tornadoes = widespread destruction. Minimum pressure 962mb.

I was living in the Houston area then, Richmond, 35 miles SW. This is the first hurricane to scare me. After it was 'to late', I decided I should have evacuated...survived anyway.

This is so satisfying. The city of NOLA calls out the WAPO for inaccurate reporting:)

Nice catch. Meanwhile, it is sad that the historic and cultural treasure of New Orleans has been beaten down by generations of corruption.

Had to double check... that 961 is actually 991... was about to freak out and wonder if this thing was gonna blow up to a cat 3 just before landfall.
