New questions about secret Russian submarine's mission before fatal fire (interesting rumor)
Fox News clip ^ | July 5, 2019

Well this is interesting.

Have NO idea if it is true, but it is interesting anyway.

This clip raises the question, was there an effort to possibly be accessing global internet cables, under the ocean?

Might be one possibility to consider, if the internet is ever experiencing unusual interruptions.

Maybe. :)

That is what the mini sub was theorized to be... A special forces multipurpose sub ideally suited to tapping or cutting cables.

That’s my suspicion. It would be a great way to disrupt the an enemy’s communications.

I have suspected the sub’s purpose was for tapping into the cable communication traffic when I first read about the incident. I have no idea how it is done. Perhaps a high tech sensor placed on the cable is able to extract all of the contents of the communication signals. With sensors deep under the ocean, there is little background noise which makes a sensor’s job that much easier.

We did it in the early 1970s in the Sea of Okhotsk.

This was a chapter in the excellent book Blind Man’s Bluff about Cold War submarine special operations.

Perhaps we pre-empted the operation with that on board fire that was not so accidental. Do lasers work through water?

Isn’t satellite communication technology slowly replacing the under seas cable?

Interestingly, I believe the details of that operation were among the information Jonathan Pollard sold to the Soviets.

That "might" be possible with older cables whose operating mode is electrical. Fiber optic cables...virtually impossible. I know of no mechanism by which it might be done. Either sort of cable can be cut, but tapping the signal is another story.

Jonathan Pollard did not provide any information to the Soviets. He provided it only to Israel.

That was Robert Hanssen, the FBI agent and Opus Dei member (radical Catholic organization).

No. Fiber optics move a lot more data than radio waves, in general.

“Isn’t satellite communication technology slowly replacing the under seas cable?”

Satellites are easy to take out, we’ll be blinded in 5 minutes when and if the Russians (or Chinese, for that matter) want us to be.

Building a sub that works at 2000 feet below sea level is simply amazing (at least to me), and it’s probably even lower than our weapons can reach.

re: “Perhaps a high tech sensor placed on the cable is able to extract all of the contents of the communication signals.”

Probably not. Fiber-optic or solid-shielded coaxial cable puts out FAR less signal than thermally-induced local noise generated at the atomic level; after sufficient amplification, all you would have is “white noise” across the spectrum.

Li-Ion battery fire? I have no real idea ...

Yay, a book recommendation. Maybe Amazon hasn’t burned this one.
Heck, I am now buying direct from the author or publisher.

Satellite communications have way too much lag, you need fiber to be a serious gamer.
