LHASA, April 26 (Xinhua) -- The world's highest highway tunnel was open to traffic on Friday at an altitude of over 4,750 meters above sea level in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.
The two-way tunnel is over 5.7 km long, which is a part of the 400-km highway linking the regional capital of Lhasa with Nyingchi in the southeast of Tibet.
Construction of the tunnel started in 2015 on the 5,018-meter-high Mila Mountain, and it was completed on Monday, helping shorten the 18-km distance over the mountain to 5.7 km.
Gong Bin, project manager of Mila Mountain Tunnel of the China Railway No. 2 Bureau, said that more than 10 technological breakthroughs have been made in the course of the construction, such as improving the survey accuracy of mountain tunnels in extremely cold weather and at high altitudes.

They should run a road up Mt Everest.
Gong Bin?
Son of Gong Show?.....................
My wife is claustrophobic AND afraid of heights.
I’ll have to suggest we take a trip to drive this tunnel some day.
NOT.
At least our money transfer to China has done some good.
Amazing.
But I hope everyone using it is extra-careful.
PING.
4,750 meters = 15,584 feet
As thin as the air is at that altitude breathing could become a real problem if there is much buildup of car exhaust in the tunnel. I hope they installed a good ventilation system.
Can you imagine how many fools would be taking that road to their death? Mt. Everest is already littered with dead bodies.
Doest look too bad/scary

Highway overpasses are scary to Mrs. R2.
I will give her credit though. We travelled the Million Dollar Highway and Independence Pass last September. She did not freak out. She didn’t enjoy it, but did OK.
Take the road? to La Dak and Kardung La

How about an elevator?
I have the same thing...more claustrophobia. Not a fan of long tunnels.
China never does anything out of the goodness of their heart, ESPECIALLY for the Tibetan people. Think ‘dual use’...
And the PRA is one step closer to absorbing the rest of the Himalayan countries, and pushing India away.
That’s another bucket list item for me.
I would like to see the plan to remove debris from that tunnel in an accident scene.
bkmk
Seems like a lot of money just to save 7.6 miles off people’s trips.
