The collective outcry by President Trump's critics over his Independence Day "Salute to America" was overblown, according to Marc Thiessen.
Previous presidents have used the July 4 holiday to give speeches and hold events, Thiessen said Friday on "The Story."
"Of all the stupid freakouts that we've had since DT was elected, this has got to be the stupidest of all time," Thiessen claimed.
"There are a lot of people with egg on their face today.
"The resistance told us that if we elected Donald Trump, there'll be tanks on the streets, and it was like it was finally happening."
The former speechwriter to ex-President George W. Bush said Presidents Woodrow Wilson, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and others have given similar addresses at places like Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
"It's the job of the president to give a speech on the Fourth of July," he said.
"They said it's going to be a partisan speech, and millions of Americans tuned in and were wondering what the heck they were talking about. It was a great speech. It was moving to see all these fighter jets flying, the B-2 bomber flying over the nation's capital. It was amazing. These people are in a hole, and they keep digging."

Their best freakout was when they called President Trump a warmongering for attacking Iran, then called him a wimp when he called off the attack.
In one hour, Trump was both a war monger-er and a wimp for not attacking Iran
The brilliance of Trump is that he leverages his “asshole” personality to maneuver the Democrats into being opposed to sensible policies that most Americans support.
I watched CNN a little bit after the speech. They did look stupid.
you left the “er” off “stupid”
Anyone think Trump had those Abrams tanks brought in to pimp those whiny morons? Bet he did, and rightfully so! Har!
I was so disappointed when I woke up this morning and discovered that the loonies were still roaming around - I thought the tanks were supposed to take them away to the concentration camps!
Trump is the master sand bagger.
Go back to election night as Trump won. Maddow said, “this is not a dream, this is now your world.” Others were more specific. Some said we would have war, other countries would not respect us. The stock market crashed over night, expecting financial doom. Gay, brown, and female groups predicted that white straight males were going to take over and lock them up.
But none of that happened. We are generally at peace. Our adversaries do take us very seriously. Our financial standing has never been stronger versus the rest of the world. And Americans of every social or ethnic group are better off than they were a short two years ago, with far more jobs and higher pay.
Someone should spend the time to go back to Youtube and post those predictions that showed up on every news network after Trump won. While battling a government swamp, a court system that has fought him at every turn and, dealing with a press corp that has become unhinged in their hatred of Trump, so much so, as to openly mislead the American public, blatantly lying and spinning the news everyday so as to make little sense. As they contradict themselves constantly, Trump powers on. He is getting stronger and more targeted as he begins to trust his base, and understand his abilities.
I keep saying it, but few listen to me when I say, Trump is the most important President of our time. He is even more important than Reagan was. Trump is fighting a war. A war we as conservatives only lately began to understand. Our government had taken over. Our media was choosing our nominees. We only got to choose from two bad candidates because good candidates were subverted early in the process. Trump, while not a likely hero, has broken through. We, Americans were able to elect our champion. Trump and his base now need to wield our power and hold our position in 2020. We need to be able to pass along the will of the people to another worthy candidate in 2024. And we need to support the communication vehicles that give us real and timely news.
This might be a cruel thing to admit,
but I do hope they feel as I did the evening BO was elected the first time. Half the country felt we were thrown into the river of no return without life jackets. Aware of the BO and MO personality and history: we knew it was not to be a picnic.
No, that president did not have tanks on the street, but he did have mysterious planes flying over NYC to bring back memories of 911. He also gave us the impression of being a dictator and a future of his being in charge 4eva. Sadly, the bit about being in charge just might ring true. His thumb is still in the dike not allowing free flow of good vibrations.
And we need to support the communication vehicles that give us real and timely news.

Well said, poinq!
Tanks on the streets in a static display cannot compare to tanks on the streets deployed against American citizens at Waco TX.
I tried to find the ratings for President Trump's July 4th speech but none were published that I could find.
I guess if you subscribe to a rating service you could get results, but I'm sure they will come out over the weekend {so they can be buried}.
