US President Donald Trump has blamed a teleprompter going "kaput" for a glaring anachronism in his Fourth of July speech.
He told crowds on Independence Day the Continental Army "took over the airports" from the British during the American Revolutionary War in 1775.
Explaining away the slip-up on Friday, Mr Trump also said it was hard to read the teleprompter in the rain.
He hosted a military parade at the Lincoln Memorial on Thursday.
During his "Salute to America" speech, he was talking about the year 1775 when he said: "Our army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do."
Critics pointed out the revolutionaries could not have seized airports more than a century before the first powered flight - credited to the Wright brothers in 1903 - took off.
Outside the White House on Friday, Mr Trump said: "I guess the rain knocked out the teleprompter.
"I knew the speech very well so I was able to do it without a teleprompter but the teleprompter did go out and it was actually hard to look at anyway because there was rain all over it."
The president spoke to reporters as he departed with First Lady Melania Trump for the weekend to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Mr Trump said the military parade he hosted on Thursday was a "fantastic night" and forecast a rise in US military recruitment.
Before winning the White House, Mr Trump used to mock ex-President Barack Obama for relying on an autocue.
Twitter users were quick to poke fun at Mr Trump for the error, with many using the hashtag #RevolutionaryWarAirports.

Welcome :)
Funny!..
On a ‘rebroadcast’ of Chris Plante today I learned that Joe Biden had said he had received a phone call a couple of days ago and she was ‘concerned’ about USA today etc etc
Now that was from the day after Mothers Day and - I do pay attention - this is the first I had heard of JBs gaff OR - If I did then I really didn’t give an RA about it.
It was in the rain, people were drenched, and the camera was dripping as it broadcast.
Of course his teleprompter was covered in rain.
My suggestion for future: larger font in bold.
Keep it up Leftists, you’re only succeeding in making Americans hate you even more!
Any other twit would have left.
My balls are brass
Trumps are gold.
God Bless President Trump.
At least he didn’t talk about corpsemen or the fallen heroes in the crowd/
It was a wonderful event that the media hates for two reasons: Their hatred of American patriotism and their hatred of Trump. They would have jumped on anything to be critical.
Did I miss Trump stating where the Army aircraft were stationed?
I think I would give a lengthy patriotic ramble of mispronunciations. The media would go berserk before my followers noticed that my stroked out letters just happened to spell something like “Let freedom ring.”
“Wow. The media is truly desperate.”
Totally. My first thought was to laugh at ‘what an obscure thing to pick out and write an article about’.
YUP!
On today's news, at the very end, in the 15 second blurb about "Salute to America", all they focused on is the tweets about the "airport". If Rip Van Winkle had just woken up and turned on the news, he'd have no idea that there was a White House celebration of Independence Day.
I never even noticed it. I guess I must’ve been too busy just feeling good about the whole thing.
Remember when Biden said that FDR was on TV in the 1930s?

With defiance and arrogant confidence Obama and many of the despicable rat senators have muttered some of the most idiotic comments the world has ever heard
Trump had it right. By the end of the war, there wasn’t a single airport in the United States which was in British hands.
He likely got extemporaneous and got off-track to make a point.
It happens even the very best of speakers.
Or all those CORPSEmen?
I think the Army Apaches were early and threw him off script. He did not mention where they came from or even what they were.
