Trump Is Losing His Own Trade War
Reason ^ | 7/4/2019 | VERONIQUE DE RUGY

President Donald Trump likes to keep score. Well, here's a score for him: America, zero; while the rest of the world keeps tallying up free trade points. That's right; while American consumers have been waiting for well over a year to see some resolution to the various trade disputes started by Trump, other countries have agreed to lower their tariffs against each other and signed free trade agreements with one another. Meanwhile, American consumers and exporters are drowning in a sea of high tariffs.

Some of Trump's supporters have argued that the president is actually a free trader who wants lower tariffs all around. Well, if that's the case, he has succeeded in a way. Everyone is getting lower tariffs—everyone except U.S. consumers, that is.

The world’s top bicycle maker, Giant Manufacturing Co., acknowledged this fact loud and clear by announcing that the era of “Made in China” was over.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And they are not the only one.
Other companies are moving operations out of China.
"Trump's Trade War" is about long-term realignment of the global supply chain.
Only fools, and losers, look only at the bottom line. Because there is often more than meets the eye when looking exclusively at just one segment of an issue.
The idiots at “Reason” aren’t looking at the whole bottom line. Real wages going up and unemployment at several-decades low is a win for the average American. What you’re seeing are the cheerleaders for the corporatists getting their thongs in a wad.
Picking up on what you wrote, it is absolutely heart breading to pass through town after town and see how things have deteriorated due to industries and mostly small business moving or just gone out of business.
People NEED to work - there is dignity in work and providing for your children. Most people are not lazy. But they need hope, maybe a little help or guidance.
Believe me, there is nothing more destructive that having a feeling of despair. It is a very, very hard thing to see.
I haven’t noticed a dime’s worth of difference in what I purchase. If anything my utility costs and gasoline expense has offset any commodity increases. Avocados are still a bargain. lol
Anybody looked at the currency rates lately?
The dollar is kicking butt of just about any of them.
Why? Because our economy is better than all the rest.
Goods go to where the money is to buy them.
“Drowning in a sea of tariffs”. Wow.
I hadn’t noticed. Did some of the stuff at Walmart go up two or three cents? Not sure.
POTUS has made it clear that the sole purpose is to bring said countries to the table, renegotiate horrible imbalanced deals made in the past! The Art of the deal! The fact they can’t see the big picture or refuse to.... Finally some common sense in the white house and for the good of this country not lining the pockets of politicians!
Thank you Mr President!
And your opinion of her is sexist and bigoted. Truly, you can’t presume to know a person’s political and intellectual foundation by their appearance.
Truer words were never spoken! Until the 1980’s an average kid just out of high school in my city could get a good job. He could take a bottom-rung position at one of the many local factories, then work his way up.
Those opportunities are all gone now. And nobody involved has clean hands. Government regulators, corporate officials, union bosses, they all played a part in this.
...it is absolutely heart breading to pass through town after town and see how things have deteriorated due to industries and mostly small business moving or just gone out of business.
No doubt, and it has an incredibly corrosive effect on the local community.
On the other side, there are hundreds of communities across America, many of them in the sunbelt, where there's been tremendous growth of business and opportunity.
Look at the growth and wealth created in places like Texas and Silicon Valley from the same technologies that have dramatically impacted our manufacturing processes.
The economy evolves and as it does there will be winners and losers.
In my view the answer isn't to hunker down and try to stop the change - the economic forces are inexorable.
The answer is to look forward, not back, and figure out how to help the people affected by these changes adapt and take advantage of the new opportunities.
The espionage and intellectual property cases are very strong, and he should be doing something about them.
But he’s not. What he is focused on is the bilateral trade deficit, which is a meaningless accounting matter.
Since your defense of her consists of leftist rhetoric, I accept your left-handed compliment, lol. And no, de Rugy’s own leftist rhetoric speaks for itself.
BTW, it’s interesting that you’re on here a mere two years and your handle includes “Proud”. Got lost on the way to DU?
The dollar is kicking butt of just about any of them.
It is, and the result is record trade deficits - which isn't a bad thing, BTW.
These people live in a fantasy world.
There is so much behind the scenes - far beyond nice little WTO agreements.
I’m retired CIA. We reported, constantly, how even some of our best allies and trading partners SCREWED us behind the scenes. And laughed at us for decades.
Don’t even get me started on China. They have everything to lose - we have nothing to lose. Support Trump and he will get us much better deals than what we had in the past. They will still screw us - but not nearly as badly.
I will gladly pay more for stuff if it’s made here and/or protected from foreign country dumping in the USA...AS LONG AS, it’s equal or better quality (most times it is) and it reduces the technology transfer risk.
Free trade means free for other countries. It takes a mighty naive person to believe China is trading “free” with the US. They steal patents, make knock-offs they don’t design, learn technology from us and then treat workers like slaves.
Like SLAVES, Nike!
If buying American means I pay a bit more, that is OK by me. It is a mighty poor patriot who can be bought for a couple of bucks on a pair of sneakers!
Most of the time, you would not have to pay more. Not to mention, quality counts, and apart from (most) union-built automobiles, the USA has a reputation for superior quality in general.
