Next weekend the wife and I are gonna be in Austin Texas for a long weekend.
I've looked at Austin's tourism website and have gotten a few ideas - but I also like to know what Freepers like to do or see when they're in the area.
We're looking at a trip to Berdoll Pecan in Bastrop, maybe a trip to the LBJ National Historic Park, maybe visit the Texas State Cemetery.
I'm not a huge fan of live music. I don't mind it. It's just not a priority for me. The wife and I love BBQ and would take any good suggestions.
Any suggestions, recommendations, accommodation suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated.
you need to hit the Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg. It’s a short drive from Austin (I am a defense Contractor in Austin) and it’s just fabulous. Also, if you like German Food the main street is filled with some fantastic restaurants.
the Blanton and Bullock Museums are great to experience. Also a must is to hit Black’s BBQ.
Don’t! Austin is the the liberal armpit of TX. Try San Antonio(not much better but it has The Alamo), New Braunfels or any place other than Austin. Every $ you spend in Austin will be given to a liberal who hates you.
1. Hamilton's Pool (google it and you'll need to reserve a spot)
2. Barton Springs pool
3. Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood...if you want to drive an hr or so west of Austin, I highly recommend Cooper's Pit BBQ in Llano.
4. Stay away from downtown..the urban outdoorsmen tend to use the sidewalks as their personal litter boxes and there are also some aggressive panhandlers, esp. along the "drag" (Guadalupe) which runs along the west side of UT campus.
5. Mount Bonnel is nice, gives you good views of the city and hill country.
Bet it is regular liberal utopia. Desperately poor people high on drugs and defecating on the sidewalks.
BBQ: Visit Lockart if you LOVE BBQ

Specifically Smitty’s. Parking lot accessible
off Hwy 183.
Don’t drop the soap.
Salt Lick, Driftwood, TX...for the state’s best BBQ.
“Dont! Austin is the the liberal armpit of TX.”
I’ve heard that too. But we do have a small amount of business there. We can’t avoid it.
Be sure to see the bats at sunset. I forget what bridge to see that off. Last time I was there we stayed at The FOur Seasons and you could see them very well behind the hotel.
SA is 90 minutes south and New Braunfels is between the two.
Buckees in Bastrop..... cleanest restrooms around.
Then enjoy the shopping extravaganza.
Fredericksburg is nice. Be sure to go a few miles north to hike Enchanted Rock.
“Are you going there for business and just want to know what to do while youre there?”
A small amount of business. Nothing too stressful or urgent. Just something that needs to be done. I’m guesstimating that 95% of the time were there is leisure time.
In spite of all of the bad I’ve heard about Austin, I have to be there and may as well try to find the best of the area.

Congress Street Bridge and the bats, one of the most amazing acts of nature I have ever seen. Lake Travis is nice but its crowded, maybe you want to go swimmin nekkit at hippie hollow - only legal place in Texas to do so.
There’s a Buckees in Foley Alabama just north of Orange Beach...........
Pappacitos, Pappadeaux or any of the Pappas restaurants. Go to the nearby town of Gruene.
Franklin Bbq...get there early
South Congress ave is fun and lots to see
Guero’s garden area on SoCo has good music usually on weekends during the afternoon and great tacos and margaritas
Bats at dusk on south Congress bridge
Barton springs pool
Hamilton pool
Mt Bonnell
Lotsa stuff to do and see and the fact is if you arent looking for trouble you are highly unlikely to find it...very little actual violent crime in austin
Repeating the most sound advice I have seen posted here:
DON’T GO!!!
“BBQ: Visit Lockart if you LOVE BBQ”
Yes. That us exactly what I was going to say. Black’s in Lockhart.
There is Blacks in Austin but go to Lockhart.
You are getting out of Austin in to Texss if you’re going to Bastrop. You’re not just in Austin like the title of your post says.
Salt Lick Barbecue in Driftwood is fun.
Stop by Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Springs if you like chicken fried steak or pies.
It’s very beautiful in that Hill Country area north west of Austin. You can drive around the lakes.
