Los Angeles War on Smog Slipping After Years of Improvement
LA Times ^ | July 1, 2019 | Tony Barboza and Rahul Mukherjee

Decades of emissions-cutting regulations under a bipartisan law — the 1970 Clean Air Act — have eased the choking pollution that once shrouded U.S. cities. Cleaner air has saved lives and strengthened the lungs of Los Angeles children.

But now, air quality is slipping once again.

Bad air days are ticking up across the nation, and emissions reductions are slowing. The most notable setback has been with ozone, the lung-damaging gas in smog that builds up in warm, sunny weather and triggers asthma attacks and other health problems that can be deadly.

Health effects from ozone pollution have remained essentially unchanged over the last decade — “stubbornly high,” according to a study published this year by scientists at New York University and the American Thoracic Society.

Nowhere is the situation worse than in Southern California, where researchers found a 10% increase in deaths attributable to ozone pollution from 2010 to 2017. The region has long reigned as the nation’s smog capital and has seen a resurgence of dirty air in the last few years, one that has sharpened the divide between wealthier coastal enclaves with cleaner air and lower-income communities farther inland with smoggy air.

Officials say it will take billions in spending to meet smog-reduction deadlines under the Clean Air Act. But no one knows where the money will come from.

According to the LA Times, this is Trump's fault of course, and the article conveniently fails to mention that it was then governor Ronald Reagan who passed the landmark 1970 Clean Air act, even as he brought our state government back to fiscal and budgetary sanity.

1) No mention of unmitigated immigration, migration, and the unhinged flow of people and traffic between borders...or how Gov. Jerry Brown gave 1 million plus undocumented people driver's licenses.

2) Nor the fact that City Hall and state officials pocket money from the onslaught of Chinese billionaire real-estate investors who now own all the major public spaces and prime real estate in our city/county -- as they build hideous looking high-density skyscraper office and apartment buildings. Meanwhile our homeless population is exploding, but we now have Beijing setting our environmental standards.

3) Public transportation is a joke, and the LA Metro is basically a glorified homeless shelter.

4) The city continually approves more high-density zoning, with 3rd world style apartment buildings stacked one on top of the other (on earthquake prone foundations) to address our so-called 'housing crisis.' Parking concerns? Traffic? No need to fear, just smoke a joint, hold your nose to offset the smell of trash, sewage, and homelessness - and take the bus that may or may not come.

'Richest' state in the union, but oh dear, where will the 14 billion plus dollars come from to address the latest crisis?

The list goes on. A mess.

The smog must be caused by all of the people fleeing Los Angeles.

I am sure there are a couple of people in So. Cal with some money left in their pockets the government has not already taken.

I remember Glen Campbell’s remark about the smog in Los Angeles in that he said God created it so he didn’t have to see what was going on in that city.

Stationed in San Diego in the early 70's, when driving north on I/5, I could always tell when I was nearing LA by the stinging sensation in my eyes.

A decade or so later, on a visit near LA, I was pleasantly surprised by the clear blue sky over the city.

Too bad the clear skies didn't last.

The only reason there is what appears to be smog is because we are told it is by the left leaning, agenda driven media.

The same haze seen in so many photographs was around as described in books almost 200 years ago.

Sorry, Angelenos. The money was spent trying to reduce CO2, a harmless gas, and there’s no more to fight real pollution.

Los Angeles is fighting a losing battle against local climate, the natural geography of the Los Angeles Basin, and population. When Cabrillo arrived in San Pedro Bay almost 500 years ago, he named it Bahia de los Fumos or “Bay of Smoke”, due to the natural phenomenon of smog and smoke and how the LA Basin contains it due to its geography and prevailing winds.

“But no one knows where the money will come from.”

It will come from the middle class, one way or another.

Can you please expand on this? I have so many climate change ‘greenie’ friends thinking they can make the world better...

After putting up with the CARB smog check insanity for years, I have to laugh. The illegal aliens just ignore it as they do insurance and registration laws.

That, and Pedro down at the corner gas station is a relative and knows how to game the CARB inspection racket.

In the 70’s? Should have sampled it in the early 60’s. Drawing a full breath was painful some days.

Not to mention that it was then-Gov. Reagan who created CARB...ironically a poster-child for bureaucratic failure in the wake of 2019 smog if there was no other better example.
