Stationed in San Diego in the early 70's, when driving north on I/5, I could always tell when I was nearing LA by the stinging sensation in my eyes.

A decade or so later, on a visit near LA, I was pleasantly surprised by the clear blue sky over the city.

Too bad the clear skies didn't last.

In the 70’s? Should have sampled it in the early 60’s. Drawing a full breath was painful some days.
