Tackle gender inequality at home and at work
University of Chicago Booth Review ^ | May 15, 2019 | Claudia Goldin

...

Studies of various occupations suggest that the cost of flexibility is particularly substantial in some careers. In the case of MBA-degree holders, women are taking off somewhat more time than men are. Although women make far less than men in the financial and corporate sectors, most of the difference is due to their hours of work and, to some extent, to the amount of time they take off. When we say that women are working shorter hours, it’s still about 45–50 hours weekly. They’re just not working the jobs that demand super long hours. And the penalty in these sectors from taking any time off is harsh. The ability of individuals to work part-time is limited. And half of the women who claim to be working part-time are self-employed.

The situation is somewhat similar for doctors. In the Community Tracking Survey data set of doctors, 60–70 percent of physicians are in pediatrics, family medicine, and internal medicine. Female MDs are disproportionately in lower on-call specialties and are therefore working fewer hours. Among younger physicians (meaning less than 45 years old), females work almost 10 fewer hours weekly than males in just about every specialty. And for physicians older than 45, the number of hours for men goes down and the number of hours for women goes up, cutting the difference in half. What’s interesting to consider is that when you’re younger, you can work fewer hours and remain a doctor. But when you’re older and working somewhat more, you’re less likely to be in a leadership position, such as the head of your department.

The point is that many occupations have severe penalties for shorter and more-flexible hours. They give large windfalls to those who work hours that are less controllable, and this creates real problems for couples.

Kamala Harris Seeks Fines for Firms That Fail to Close Gender Pay Gap. Harris ought to read this, but she's a demagogue, and it probably would make no difference.

I think what Professor Goldin is saying is true, that women take jobs with more flexible and reasonable hours in order to spend time with their children, but I don't see why it's a problem. Earning money is a means to an end. If a husband earns more than his wife, they still enjoy the same standard of living.

Have you found your candidate for 2020 yet since you will not be voting for President Trump?

I get frustrated too, to hear politicians talk of the pay gay, and sometimes saying we need to pass a law guaranteeing equal pay.

The Equal Pay Act of 1963 already bans paying women less for the same job as a man.

If there are problems with enforcing that law, that is a separate discussion.

And it’s a big lie to say women are paid less. As noted here, women have a tendency to take less demanding but lower paying jobs. That is not illegal discrimination if some people voluntarily choose to take jobs which enable them to better take care of family life at home.

And as some others have said, if you can really hire a woman for 30% less to do a job, why does any man anywhere have a job? All businesses would hire only females to work there, if they could really save 30% on labor costs by only employing females.

“most of the difference is due to their hours of work and, to some extent, to the amount of time they take off.”

These studies are meant to convey a notion told to me many years ago by someone who decided it was time to sell his business:

“I want out because when you hire someone today it is like you are adopting them. I am interested in what they produce at work, period, not what their personal problems are or why I need keep them on the payroll”.

He was ahead of his time.

Well, you just waved a red flag in front of the woman-hating contingent of FR. Here's a quick preview of what you can expect:

1. "It's all lies; they earn less because they put in fewer hours!" (Yes, that's what the article says, but they won't read the article, they'll read the headline and start rage-typing.)

2. "Oh, another BS article about how men don't help around the house!" (Article says nothing about that whatsoever, but they won't read the article, they'll read the headline and start rage-typing.)

3. "Something something something unmarried hags with cats and boxed wine!" (Nothing to do with it, but they didn't even read the entire title, they saw the words gender and inequality and started rage-typing.

4. "You are a liberal, go back to DU." (Also didn't read the entire title, they saw the words gender and inequality and started rage-typing.

In a two-earner family, when someone needs to take time off to tend the kids, it makes sense to choose the spouse with the lesser income.
Usually she chooses herself.

Men and women are different. Let us stop worrying how that difference shows up at work and in society. Accept that the differences are real and that they are not going to go away. Vive la différence!

but they won't read the article, they'll read the headline and start rage-typing.

That is so true while the politicians create more layers of laws to placate the "rage" while ignoring existing established law. The typical American voter votes by headline "logic".
