Vermont imposes 92% tax on e-cigarettes

A 92% tax on e-cigarettes went into effect in Vermont Monday as part of an effort to curb youth vaping in the Green Mountain State.

State Rep. George Till, who sponsored the tax increase bill, said the measure will help keep tobacco products out of the hands of kids, who are most affected by price hikes.

"We know the group that is most sensitive to price is teenager," he told CBS MoneyWatch. "And we know that these companies are going out of their way to get kids addicted."

The new tax, which passed in February, will not effect packs of cigarettes, which will still be subject to a $3.08 tax. E-cigarettes and other tobacco-substitute products, including those "intended for human consumption by smoking, chewing, or in any other manner," were previously subject to the state's standard 6% sales tax.

For years I did the make your own cigarettes too. I’d make them Saturday night while watching TV.

Then about 10 years ago I found the e-cigs. Must say my lungs feel a lot better. The morning hack is gone. Clothes don’t reek of smoke. Cost is about 50 cents a day.

The government wants the money. That’s all. The kids are just a convenient excuse. Money. Taxes. Government misses the money generated from cigarettes.

“I sense a large black market forming...”

They can buy it online. It will be cheaper and can be shipped overnight.

Meanwhile the left pushes pot to our kids and lets them chop off vital parts and kill their babies without telling us.

Note to folks living in Vermont: If the rich are bugging out of your state, you might want to look at them as your canary in the mine shaft. And the canary is croaking.

I was in southern vermont recently. lots of places were for sale, big estate kind of places.

The income there seems to be predicated on rich people purchasing the things that the creative class makes.

Famous film star was looking at some property and everyone was agog about the money that would arrive with him.

Higher taxes for better health. Got it.

_____________

This is what happened forty years ago to cigarettes in the US.

So we traded one disease for another, Cancer/emphasema for morbid obesity/diabetes.

It is my opinion that all cultures need something to get through the day to day, alcohol, nicotine, betel nuts, what ever it takes. and have it be socially acceptable.

Wait a second... are they saying that people will change their behavior rather than pay higher taxes? That’s crazy talk!

We get to VT a few times a year. And we talk to small biz owners all over the state. Every single one we’ve spoken to is very worried about getting and keeping employees. We talked to one employee who had a 3 hour round trip commute for a retail job. There was no affordable housing closer.

VT is a mess.

You nailed it. That is exactly what they will do.

Why is it that liberals can only see taxes as a single variable equation? If taxes are x and I raise x by 5%, the receipts should be x+5%. It never happens that way. They fail to understand human nature. Changes in taxes will cause changes behavior.

My father and grand father both died of smoking related diseases. I would have killed for a safe alternative that could have helped either of them kick the habit before it was too late. But democrat politicians have managed to warp the technology that could have saved them into a dangerous bogie man that they must make money off of ... for the children of course.

I’ve been thinking about trying the e-cigs. I’m sick of being out of breath so easy. I need to find something that isn’t flavored though. Don’t want fruity flavors or minty stuff.

They look kind of inconvenient and some are huge.

I know people whose children are barely managing. These are the hippie children of hippie docs and lawyers. Only people who really make it there are the trust funders. Vermont used to be full of them.

Do it. I did and haven’t had a cigarette in 6 years. I don’t do flavors either, not interested in that, I just wanted to quit smoking.

Interesting things happen when you switch. In 2 weeks you will notice that you feel better in the morning, no coughing etc. Then check your bank account in a month. There will suddenly be “new” money in there!

I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

got a brand name?

My wife’s tried it a few times and spent quite a bit on the unit, $30-40 bucks for eaach one she tried, and flavored liquids and now she’s back to just cigs. That kind of turned me off on the idea.

I envision E-cigarette stores opening right across the CT river in NH or across the state lines into Mass & NY.

These state reps always think they live in a vacuum. This means people will just drive across the border to the surrounding states like NH. It is not that far of a drive.
This will just crush the revenue for VT retailers and shift it across state lines. In addition, their VT tax revenue will probably go down.

Those E-cigarette stores are everywhere here in NH.

I use an Eleaf iStick Power. The unit is important because you will ultimately want the draw to mimic a cigarette. Too small of a hit and you will get frustrated and give up.

The liquid I order from Angel Vapors in Florida. I get it in a day or two. The Flavor is One Hump (as in camel), it tastes very subtle and mimics a cigarette. You can select your nicotine level from 24 down to 0 as you see fit. If you are trying to quit smoking, I would start somewhere around level 18.
