Apple Inc. AAPL -0.91% is manufacturing its new Mac Pro computer in China, according to people familiar with its plans, shifting abroad production of what had been its only major device assembled in the U.S. as trade tensions escalate between the Trump administration and Beijing.

Not good, at all.
The US made design never had a chance. The graphics were really old on release, and this premium model did not get significant updates. Worse, no internal expansion options.
It’s likely because that’s the only way they can get the costs down enough for people to buy it.
Ill put money down that China made Timmah an under the table offer he couldnt refuse.
I think only older declining models will remain or go to Chinese production facilities.
Apple’s biggest supplier, Foxconn, is already ramping up capacity in India and elsewhere for the newer products. Other Apple suppliers are expanding outside of China as well.
It costs upwards of $6000... $5000 plus tax, shipping, and not including any options someone wants to add.
"The product's gonna look like crap anyway, might as well make it run like crap too. Hell, make it as unreliable as crap and go for the trifecta."
"But keep the prices UP, because REASONS!"
Wtf?
Yea, 8 expansion slots and the most powerful graphics card made...OK
What does Apple NOT understand about having their stuff stolen are these companies really this STUPID!!!
Of course, you are right! It has absolutely nothing to do with labor costs....absolutely nothing.
China has stolen what they need from Apple at this point...I wouldn’t worry too much more about it.
I think this probably had EVERYTHING to do with their designer leaving after 20 years, WHY on earth would he want his creativity and designs stolen and produced cheaper by the Chinese!!!
makes a person very very prone to stop buying Apples
Ooo - you so smart - you make funny.
Think Mcfly - if it had anything to do with labor costs they wouldve already moved the factory.
Theyre not going to produce enough Mac pros to make labor costs that different (especially in light of the costs of having to build out a new factory plus the potential tariff costs of a China trade war)
This was a quid-pro-quo deal for China favors and to allow the iPhone to remain selling in China and to give the finger to Trump. But mostly the former.
the amazing thing is that Apple management would say “Screw USA!” like this,
when Apple already makes MOST of its products in foreign countries, especially Communist China
you’d think that maybe the management would be aware of just how upset most Americans are with this mass-scale exporting of jobs
and that they’d make a few of their products in USA, at least a few anyways
How much profit does that consideration add to their bottom line?
Management at Apple is about making money for shareholders.
any experienced manager will know to go beyond the
first maths
(yes, cheap Chinese “slave labor” will undoubtedly save Apple some production cost)
and look at... the impact on the company’s public image, political safety, governmental relations, and marketing/customer attitudes.
any one of these costs to the company will do it more harm in the long run that the production savings could possibly help it in the short term
any one of them.
also, the Opportunity Costs (like, Apple slaps American consumers in the face.... instead of....building positive customer relations by opening a couple USA factories to employ American citizens, with tons of publicity of course, ha!
Apple’s management shows itself to be a very short-term focused group, which is a sure sign of corporate failure in the making, as per any good class in Business Strategy
