A California bill aimed at applying rent control across the state is set to receive its first hearing in the state Senate. The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider AB 1482 by Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco on July 9th.

The proposed bill would apply rent control to all types of housing in every city and county in California. The bill surfaced despite the overwhelming defeat of Proposition 10, a statewide rent control bill on last November’s ballot.

The California Apartment Association remains opposed to the bill, despite several amendments promised by Chiu, Including ...

How about a Tax Control Bill. The reason why housing is too expensive is due to out of control taxes and spending.

If they solve that problem, they can work on a Poop Control Bill, a Homeless in the Streets Bill, an Illegal Immigration is Killing Us Control Bill, a Hollywood Control Bill, and etc.

It doesn’t work! Plus it’s illegal and unconstitutional. The government has no right to interfere with transactions, or to set prices.

All Rent Control does is create slums, when the property owners cannot make enough money to keep the properties up they abandon them, then they become dens of drug infested gang hideouts................

All Rent Control does is create slums

The other thing that it does, like all price controls, is create shortages. In this case, it will cause a severe housing shortage.

If they pass ‘Rent Control’ there will be Condo Conversions like crazy.

Soon, no apartments to be rented, just bought.

A former co-worker lived in an apartment that was converted to condos. He had to either buy it or get out within a certain time limit.

He bought it.............

I am in Pennsylvania. The state government here has set the retail price of milk since the 1930's.

There must be a secret IQ test that is given to all prospective California legislators, and if the results are above 80, they are encouraged to become Starbucks baristas instead.

California needs rigid rent control on all rental property, residential or commercial, in the State. That should provide princely incomes to bureaucrats charged with overseeing its management. The off books prices of exemptions should skyrocket rapidly.

Please...PLEASE...show me one example of where rent controls worked in the long run. In the long run, they are the perfect recipe for creating slums.

In the short run, landlords work with the fixed rents. As prices creep up, eventually landlords see their incomes falling, so they start cutting back on maintenance. To make sure it fails, the city council raises property taxes over time, too, which just speeds up the spiral. If pushed far enough, landlords simply abandon the property because no reasonable person can make a profit by owning it. This causes the city funding to dry up and it spirals downward.

Think it can’t happen. We already bailed out New York City once, Trenton, NJ, never did fully recover.

How damn stupid can Leftists be?

Primarily it is due to extreme land use restrictions. There is nowhere to build except if tearing down something already existing.
