It’s our elites who are driving America’s divisions

In his new book, “Fall,” the celebrated sci-fi author Neal Stephenson envisions a future United States split between the violent, gun-toting, uneducated, cross-burning religious fanatics of bullet-ridden “Ameristan” and the peaceful, educated, secular denizens of the nation’s Blue enclaves, where decorum and truth always prevail.

Stephenson, one of the most imaginative novelists of our time, fails to live up to his usual standards with “Fall.” Cultural and political elites have long depicted a Red America teeming with slack-jawed extremists; there is nothing original about his vision. In fact, it isn’t very far removed from the perception many coastal elites hold today.

A widely quoted new study, “The Perception Gap,” finds that both Democrats and Republicans imagine that almost twice as many people on the other side hold radical views than actually do. The study is the work of a group called More in Common. Yet even some of its polling questions reproduce the same biases the group decries, framing liberal positions as natural or mainstream and conservative ones as extreme.

I hate the late trend of shooting all movies so dark one has to imagine what is going on.

I once thought we had to send our kids to college. No more. I am now crusading against doing just that.
Colleges are over priced and often do not lead to good jobs. They are mills of indoctrination into liberalism and socialism to minds at their most impressionable.

College loans are way too easy to get but hard to pay off if you don’t have a job.

Go to trade school and the library.

I agree with you. The hard thing is that the kids have been convinced that they just have to go to college.

What’s wrong with a 4 year party after high school? As long as Daddy can pay for it?

Name a radical Republican view on anything? They are such milquetoast losers that the term radical is the last word I would use to describe them.

The GOPe has been hijacked by globalists and Libertarians. They are Conservative In Name Only (CINO). What is needed now are Patriots and Nationalists and not loser Free Traitors™ like you.

Matthew 7:16-18

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.

18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

The modern Democrat party is the party of tribalism (Balkanization of the Republic) and death. I cannot in good conscience ever vote for ANY Democrat on any level of government.

Not to mention, if you believe in man made global warming (I don’t care what they change the name to) then you are a certifiable nut job. Don’t tell me I’m wring about how many of those retarded fruitcakes believe that nonsense.

I think one of your points is that the term "the other side" is misleading WRT many issues. But I would say that RINO support for open borders (including lack of support for enforcement) is disastrous.

It sounds like Stephenson has a very simplistic black-white version of the world. That's not so surprising, since he probably doesn't interact with Trump voters or Republicans everyday -- or ever.

His dystopia is that the Internet is so chaotic and lie-ridden that people in the Red Zone have lost any sense of what the truth is. But somehow -- through diligent policing of discourse, I guess -- people in the Blue Zone have avoided that.

But really, you can turn this dystopia inside out to produce another one -- a world in which speech is so regulated and controlled that everybody thinks alike and nobody dissents. You could call that dystopia 1984, or Brave New World.

Maybe his problem isn't that he paints the anarchic Red Zone in such dark colors but that he makes the controlled Blue Zone look so pleasant and benign. A failure of the imagination, I guess.

Trump haters might like his new book, but getting low review scores from former die hard fans.

Imagine a society in which everyone strove to keep the Ten Commandments. How radical a thought.

religious fanatics

I remember when the news and academic elites started using the word "religionist." What was wrong with "believer" or "deist?" I searched for quotes with the word "religionist" and found nothing.

Sounds fabricated and political, like "pro-choice."

The vast majority if not all the conservatives have jobs and are at work...Leaving little or no time to protest and riot...

Why are all riots that happen in the USA, populated by extremist left-wing Democrats and other liberals? They are the crazy extremists! Very hard-pressed to find any conservatives making mayhem or assaulting others.

And left-wing violence is not a recent trend. A few years ago, I took a look at the history of presidential assassination attempts, going back about a century or so. IIRC, the overwhelming majority of the assassins (successful & unsuccessful) were leftists. When Mr. Trump was elected, I commented to friends that the Secret Service had better be on their toes, given the violent nature of our current crop of "Democrats" and other left-wing whackos. And that was before two and a half years of non-stop media hate-speech, including overt incitements to violence.

When Alec Baldwin started screaming (on national tv) about stoning the Speaker of the House of Representatives to death, it was considered fairly unusual. Today, it's more like established Democrat election strategy...
