A teenage girl from Argentina has gone into a coma while vacationing in the Dominican Republic, with doctors pointing to a life-threatening diabetic condition even though her family says she has no history of diabetes.
Candela Saccone, 15, had been scheduled to return home from Punta Cana on June 19 after traveling there earlier in the week, but she reportedly got sick that morning.
Her mother, Natalia Knetch, told CNNs Spanish-language news channel that she rushed the teen who was displaying symptoms of dizziness, dehydration and vomiting to a local medical center, where doctors diagnosed her with diabetic cetoacidosis.
The condition is described online by the Mayo Clinic as a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. It normally develops when your body cant produce enough insulin, the clinic says.
Candela was reportedly transported from Punta Cana to the General Hospital of the Plaza de la Salud in Santo Domingo with Argentine officials claiming that the initial medical center did not have sufficient equipment to treat her. Its unclear when she went into the coma, only that the teen was still unconscious and in critical condition on Tuesday, yet stable and showing signs of improvement, according to CNN.

They mistake her for an American?
diabetic cetoacidosis
Unusual for someone of a healthy weight and so young.
Anyone else thinking perhaps they could take a pass on going to the DR for the time being?
Why are our people still going there?
Is there anyone who has booked a vacation in the Dominican Republic who is NOT seeking a cancellation?
Could be a bacterial infection.
Someone is targeting the DR.
This is a crazy situation.
I’m sure that a relatively poor country such as the Dominican Republic, looks to tourism as a major part of their economy.
And one would think, that the powers that be in such a country, would be eager to get to the bottom of whatever is causing all these deaths. Is it tainted alcohol? Is it sabotage or terrorist activity causing these deaths?
This is starting to sound like a test run for biological warfare, like in the novels Executive Orders or Rainbow Six.
I agree. It seems there would be a common factor too.
A small group may be involved too.
Living in Florida, I have no desire to visit the Dominican Republic.
I would rather go to Europe or Asia..............
Making America Great Again includes staying home and visiting parts of our country that you’ve never seen, unless you want to be subjected to being killed!
“Im sure that a relatively poor country such as the Dominican Republic, looks to tourism as a major part of their economy.”
Maybe it’s time to consider the “othrer end of the island?” But they will probably want to kill you too, and they won’t be so subtle about their methodology. Maybe Hispaniola should be declared a “no go” island for a couple of years and see how that affects their economies? No Yankee Dollas=Economic Disaster!
I’ve see a goodly portion of this country and some of Europe.
Anywhere I go from now on must speak English..........so, California is out..........
Or she has just come down with diabetes.............
The State Department should put DR on a warning list............
Why do people keep going to this place?
there is an area where cruise ships pull in. Restricted to passengers only. Zip line, shops, beaches, restaurants etc,. Don’t know if the companies are still stopping there after the latest news.
So they cane wear a T-shirt that says:
I went to the Dominican Republic on vacation.
AND SURVIVED!!!!!..........
It is beginning to look more like an IQ test. Smart people would stop going to this place.
