Putin halts Russian flights to Georgia in wake of anti-Russia protests

Flights carrying Russians to nearby Georgia will be halted after anti-Russian protests flared in the former Soviet republic.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a temporary flight ban to begin next month, state news agency TASS reported on Friday. It added that Putin has also ordered the repatriation of Russian citizens temporarily living in Georgia.

"Starting on July 8, 2019, Russian airlines are temporarily prohibited from carrying out air transportation (including commercial) of citizens from the territory of the Russian Federation to the territory of Georgia," TASS said.

The announcement comes after Thursday's large-scale demonstrations by Georgian protestors against a visit by Russian MP Sergey Gavrilov to the Georgian parliament in the capital city Tblisi. Georgia's president has since accused Russia of meddling in its internal affairs and stirring anger.

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili wrote on Facebook late Thursday: "Russia is our enemy and occupier. Today, the Fifth Column orchestrated by Russia might become more dangerous than open aggression."

On Friday, Moscow responded and expressed "extreme disapproval" of the protests, which it labeled a "Russophobic provocation."

Georgia was part of the Soviet Union until 1991, and in recent years has struggled with tensions with Russia over Moscow's support for the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Tensions flared between Russia and Georgia in August 2008 over a Russian-backed separatist movement in the province of South Ossetia, when then-Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili sent troops to regain control over the self-proclaimed autonomous region. Russia responded at that time by moving tanks and soldiers farther into Georgian territory.

The protests have turned violent in recent days...Russia blames USA for starting them. (Note the American flag intermingled with Georgian flags in the crowd.)

Putin can get in line, I think the Governors of California and NY don’t allow state workers to fly to Georgia either, or was that one of the Carolina’s, something about the heartbeat law I think, or was it the reversal of open bathrooms.

Over a million Russian tourists visited Georgia in 2018...suspending flights from Russia will have an immediate impact on the economy there.

I remember to this day
The bright-red Georgia clay
How it stuck to the tires
In a summer rain

because

It was a rainy night in Georgia
A rainy night in Georgia
Seems like its raining...all over the world.

According to the CIA World Factbook, 83.4% of the population of Georgia adheres to Orthodox Christianity. 10.7% of the population comprises of Muslims. 2.9% of the population is affiliated to the Armenian Apostolic Church.

It does not appear this is a Muslim /Kafir problem. -Tom

At 10.7% of a population, it’s amazing the Islamic impact on that nation.

It’s a really caustic dynamic.

Russia has upset Georgians for throwing military support behind support the contested territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, the latter of which is 20% Muslims.

Regarding Islam, Russia’s mainland is troubling enough not to mention the internal turmoil in Ingushetia, and always at the brink of boiling over in Dagestan, and parts of Tatarstan.

Chechnya for now is placated with Putin crony Kadyrov in charge...but is the most extremely Islamic (in the political sense) of them all.

Thanks for the mention.

China and Russia have some problems related to Islam.

Of course China seems to have a problem with real religions too.

I see Islam as something different than a religion. It is not ruled by love. It’s just a vicious 500 ad ideology that is very oppressive of even it’s own members, let alone others from outside the group.

I understand...but there is no excuse for China's mass abuse against the Uyghur people in Soviet-style Gulag camps. (Photo of two young Uyghur girls below.)

I tend to agree with you on that, but honestly I don’t know all the facts there.

If the Islamic folks used terrorist tactics in the region, it was going to be met with a massive show of force.

China won’t tolerate what we have elected to tolerate here, and others in Europe.

I don’t know what the answer with Islam is, but moving hoards of them into our nation is not wise.

We should have halted all those movements and done our best to send as many of them back as possible.

There are some Christian folks, but by and large they’re all Islamic and sworn to be an enemy of the West. Our two cultures are diametrically opposed to each other.

Definitely on my bucket list. Anybody I've spoken to who's traveled there RAVES about it actually. I've been told Georgia has the most amazing WINE and some of the kindest, hospitable people.

And America gave sanctuary to Chechen Islamic terrorist (aka. freedom fighter) and terrorist wannabes (perpetrators of Boston Marathon bombing), for John McCain’s sake.

“” “” The protests have turned violent in recent days...Russia blames USA for starting them. (Note the American flag intermingled with Georgian flags in the crowd.)”” “”

You are once again turning this stuff upside down.

Russia doesn’t blame US. It basically doesn’t give a rat’s behind about it.

The reality of situation is very simple and you can easily track the development.

First there was a pride parade planned and Russia has nothing to do with it but of course US Embassy sponsored it.

To bring things into perspective Georgia is quite a religious, ultra-conservative society. It closely resembles Southern Italy or Cicily in that sense.

Exactly 97% of polled at any given time there oppose all things homosexual. Like militantly oppose. They don’t need Russians to stir this up since Russians are much more tolerant than they are to start with.

The pride parade in Georgia was attacked by protestors for obvious reasons stated above. It was only natural in such a country which hates all thing homosexual.

Now the further development. Despite being rather backward in terms of European ‘values’ Georgian government pretends it is indeed a progressive European country. It is needed for a pipe dream of EU membership.

For that reason police was ordered by the government to side with the homosexuals in clashes between them and the protestors.

It has immediately backfired and the wrath of the protestors who as I said represent roughly 97% of population has now turned on the government.

But being such a progressive ‘European’ government the politicians are shocked bur can’t call spade a spade.

It would be obviously non-progressive and non-European to admit the truth.

But hey. They have a role model an Ocean across named US Democrats. Let’s say is the Russians who are doing all this stuff!

That’s the reality of situation and of course Georgia once again would be punished for this.

Banning flights to Georgia is a right call by Putin and a great first step. It is also a confirmation that Russia has no connection to the recent development because to stir stuff up it makes sense to have border open. Georgia should be banning flights in this case. Now it is simply preventing dimwit activists for the either side from travelling so the Georgian government won’t have scapegoats to coerce into interesting false ‘confessions’ of being the agents of Russian government on a mission. Secondary goal is of course a Georgian tourist industry and I suspect import embargoes are coming.
