Oberlin College is a place that I once loved and admired. It was a place that nurtured my intellectual and social development, where I established life-long friends, and where I learned how to think critically. It was a place where I the daughter of anti-apartheid activists who had grown up in South Africa befriended fellow South Africans, both black and white, and together imagined a time in the future when we would return home and be permitted to share a table for coffee. Indeed, the Oberlin community of my day valued relationship building as a means toward creating a more equitable world.
Today, 30 years later, despite having devoted my life to anti-bias education and other progressive causes, Oberlin is a place where I no longer feel welcome. This shift in my relationship with my alma mater is the outcome of three years of disturbing interactions with Oberlin College administrators and troubling observations of how they have perverted Oberlins historic legacy of social justice.

Considering the “transformation” wrought by the ANC in South Africa, she should have known better...One wonders what she thinks about that.
She was pro-Israel, so Oberlin FIRED her..!

Wow.
Oberlin has been the Berkeley of the Midwest for decades.
The transformation of Oberlin is nothing compared to the transformation of SA that she is so proud of achieving.
“She was pro-Israel, so Oberlin FIRED her..!”
Well why not, Israel like SA has been declared an apartheid state by her fellow travelers that did away with white ruled SA.
The irony totally escapes her. It’s OK for Jews to have their homeland but not whites
My father graduated from Oberlin a Theological Seminary in 1953. He was a 60’s liberal, but I think he would be shocked at the school now. He was disappointed when the seminary was closed in the 1960’s. He died in 1988. I often wonder which side of the political spectrum he would be on now. His liberalism and social justice metric were sorely tested when I married out of my race. That said, he and my husband became great friends eventually.
“Today, 30 years later, despite having devoted my life to anti-bias education and other progressive causes,”
I’m shedding absolutely no tears!
There was a teacher at my high school who had graduated from Oberlin. He wore sandals and was a vegan. Reagan really triggered him. He’s probably in his early 60’s by now, still whining about Reagan and James G. Watt and acid rain and how it is/was going to kill us all.
You’d think by now people would realize: the idealists are replaced by the zealots, the zealots are replaced by the opportunists, and then it all falls down.
“Oberlin is now a place where ideology has replaced civility and where arrogance has smothered all expressions of humility and grace.”
This is today’s Left and the Democratic party in a nutshell. Places like Oberlin have been working towards this end for the last decade or more.
having devoted my life to ... progressive causes
Thank God for your angst. I hope they spit in your tea.
Great post!
Lol, exactly. Spoken like a true Menshevik.
Great Post though long. Its length was necessary to define the intellectual corruption at Oberlin. Aside from Math, Chem, Engineering, and all the real sciences Oberlin today is a failed institution of higher learning,
There is a massive difference between apartheid era south Africa and today’s Israel.
Apartheid era South Africa had non whites as second class citizens, unable to do things because of the color of their skin. If the Boers created white only states out of South Africa that would be fine, but the whites, specifically under the British, created societies with basically permanent black servants.
In Israel today if you are an Israeli citizen and black or Arab (Christian or Muslim or Druze or other) you have exactly the same rights as everyone else.
Israel does not discriminate against non Jewish citizens.
Allow garbage people to run the place and they hire garbage people who “teach” nothing but garbage, then you end up with heads full of useless garbage heading out to the world destined to fail, and a once fine institution is in the ash heap. No offense to actual garbage collectors, you know who I’m talking about.
There’s no way to take our colleges back from them at this point unless by force.
A blanket party or four would correct the situation.
They were TOTALLY bummed when they tried to have her arrested and sent to a “re-education” camp, and found out that both the Gestapo and Dachau had gone out of business.
Oberlin needs to lose its accreditation.
