India sending warships to the Middle East to protect shipping

The Indian Navy is sending two warships to the Gulf of Oman to protect the country’s shipping in the wake of a series of attacks on tankers there in the past six weeks.

The guided-missile destroyer INS Chennai and the patrol vessel INS Sunayna “have been deployed in the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf to undertake maritime security operations,” an Indian Navy statement said.

Surveillance aircraft are also being dispatched in what India is calling Operation Sankalp.

India announced the operation Friday, one day after Iran said it shot down a US spy drone over the Gulf of Oman.

The US and Iran differ on whether the drone was in Iranian or international airspace, but the incident has inflamed an already tense situation that has seen six civilian ships damaged in the past six weeks.

The US has blamed Iran for those attacks and has released video of what it claims are Iranian military personnel removing an unexploded mine from one of the ships that was attacked.

Tehran denies involvement in the ship attacks.

This may be Trump’s strategy in the Persian Gulf. Similar, maybe, to whats been done to guard against Somali pirates. A coalition of ships are in the region patrolling. If Norwegian ships are in danger, maybe we invite Norway to send some ships to accompany ours. And India’s. And anyone else who wants to make sure their shipping is secure.

In Norway’s case they should be protecting any vessel bearing their flag the same with Japan.

That’s what the modern Navy should be for, protecting your country’s shipping and ships.

I hope China and Japan send ships to escort tankers and other shipping as well as India. Japanese officials have already said they see no reason for the JDF to send ships, though, so it would take more than minor damage to a ship owned by Japan and another destined for Japan to get them to change their minds.

NATO countries that are dependent on Middle East oil have for decades failed to live up to their spending commitments so let them build ships or better still, purchase nice new Burkes or their equivalent from us to take care of their own vital interests instead of having the US do it essentially alone.

The US has a horrible inability to prioritize anything, especially defense needs, so we end up going in all directions at once with a Hell of a lot of wasted effort. Put the defense of what's vital to our allies at least half in the laps of those who are so dependent on it rather than letting them slide.

The US is too deep in debt to keep the defense budget rolling along with business as usual as if money grows on trees while our infrastructure rots while the defense budget continues to grow.

The ships attacked bore the flags of two major naval powers: Panama and the Marshall Islands.

At least Liberian shipping interests weren’t affected. Especially that dual registry loophole.

Sankalpa (Sanskrit: संकल्प) means an intention formed by the heart and mind -- a solemn vow, determination, or will.[1] In practical terms a Sankalpa means a one-pointed resolve to focus both psychologically and philosophically on a specific goal. A sankalpa is a tool meant to harness the will, and to focus and harmonize mind and body. From Wikipedia.

Good for India. Taking it a step further, If I were the Prez, I would pull our assets out of the neighborhood and tell the rest of the planet to figure out how to protect shipping lanes that affect them.

We should stand back and let others get involved. We don’t need any grief over this. We need to build more refineries here at home.

Norway is not dependent on middle east oil. India is. So India will have ships in the Gulf. Norway won’t.
