I don’t claim to understand the historic place of referenda in the UK form of government. Brexit was the first I heard of it.

In any event, it appears to be what Americans would regard as “the law of the land.” Unfortunately, there wasn’t a due date for exiting the European Union.

Northern Ireland has consistently been the strongest supporters of the UK, including England itself, and now the conservative party wants to abandon Northern Ireland? Go figure.

26 per cent of Tory members would be happy to see Scotland leave the UK, as would 20 per cent be if Northern Ireland did so, regardless of the Brexit issue.
