“Is the EU going to..”

The only one stopping the UK from leaving is the UK itself. If the UK takes a hard Brexit and doesn’t put up a border then the leavers will protest as one of the key points of the Leave movement was to keep white EU citizens out of the UK (”Take back control of out borders”)

Shouldn’t be a problem. Let RoI citizens in without customs and check the passport of everyone else.

I had the impression the EU wanted to collect taxes at the border and wanted the UK to do so.

The customs will need to check everyone’s passports to figure out who is Irish and who isn’t.

No, its not about tariffs. In fact since the UK is a net importer from the other 27, it would be good flowing into the UK

Also note regarding between RoI and the rest of Europe.

Ireland has no interest in leaving the EU. Polls show Irish public support for remaining in the EU running at ~92%. Ireland will not be leaving the EU. The EU has made a point of showing solidarity with Ireland as a full and respected member of the club.

The majority of Irish trade is with the other EU members. Only 11% (and falling fast) of Irish exports go to the UK, and most of that is agricultural products which is a tiny part of the Irish economy these days.

Okay, then I still don’t understand. If checking passports is okay with the Good Friday Agreement, what’s the problem?

Checking passports is not in line with the good Friday agreement which talks about free movement across the border
