I have $235,000 of student debt. The first $120,000 came with a bachelors degree from my state school. Another $70,000 or so came with my masters degree. The remainder is accrued interest.
I would have to begin devoting half of my income to debt payment if I cared to pay it off by 2042. I cant do that because I make just under $4,000 per month. And that income is a fairly new development in my life. Why would I choose to pay down my debt if it meant I wouldnt be able to afford basic living expenses?
My parents are in their 60s and 70s and will live the rest of their lives with my student debt. Likely so will I. Again we wont be alone.
Three million Americans over the age of 60 are paying off student debt. Approximately 40,000 of them are having Social Security or other government payments garnished.
College was supposed to be about getting ahead in life. But its become a driver of inequality.
It does not have to be this way.
Some economists say that forgiving student debt would boost GDP by $100 billion per year for ten years and add several million jobs to the economy. It would unlock the capacity of 44 million Americans to buy homes, launch small businesses, and retire with dignity.
Congress could pay for it by repealing the $1.5 trillion tax cut it passed in 2017. Primarily benefiting the wealthy and corporations, even Goldman Sachs says that whatever economic boost the tax cut brought with it has passed.
And to keep future generations from suffering under the burden of student debt, Congress could make public colleges, universities, and trade schools in the United States free.

No mention of wgat major he was in, or what sort of job it qualified him for?

“F**k this kid. Am I supposed to give a sh*t about his poor decision making?”
Multiply his case by millions, and you’ve got a drag on the economy, especially real estate, since so many in his generation can’t buy homes.
We can already see he didn't learn anything. Congress doesn't pay for shit, the taxpayers do. And we say...
GFY!
And just who held a gun to your head to sign the papers?
Sheesh - and they want to lower the voting age... with nincompoops like this in the voting booth, we're toast as a nation.
I would like someone to explain to me how it is even possible for someone to rack up that kind of debt when the average student loan debt in 2017 was $30,100. I got my daughter through 5 years in a state university with a double major of Education and History with no debt. She worked to pay her share by making pizzas for a couple of years and lived in a dorm to cut costs. I am sick and tired of these whiny little snowflakes who don’t want to work in a restaurant with deep fat fryer. If they’re gonna forgive their debt then I want a credit to be split between my daughter and myself.
Our daughter lived at home, went to community college for the first 2 years and worked part time at night. Then she lived on campus to finish her degree. No debt.
He says the rest is interest.
Didn’t he think about what his “education” was going to cost, and what his potential earnings would be?
A simple cost/benefit analysis would have helped him decide. It’s actually based on common sense, and you don’t need an economics degree to do it.
“Welcome to the real world.”
The real world has plenty of bailouts. But only for the rich. Don’t you remember TARP, by Bush and Obama? Billions in bailouts for the banks while people were losing their homes?
A Master’s Degree and making LESS than $48,000.00 a year!?
What in the world did they study?
But I bet this kid was all for illegal aliens coming in our country and getting everything for “free”. Get used to paying for their “free” stuff, Skippy.
If you're looking for supporters of that crap, "DU" is over there ===>
If you're just trying to virtue-signal
You kind of missed the boat. "Occupy" protests are so ten minutes ago. "Code Pink" (You seem like a Code Pinko, actually) is even more passe
maybe Antifa is more your speed.
“This guy is making the case for bringing back Debtors Prisons /”
Yes, there are a lot of empty cells that were never occupied by banksters after the housing crash, because they got bailed out with our tax money.
here is some info on the writer of this self-inflicted story-—
It appears he spent more than $200,000 to get a degree in journalism.

[Bachelors degree. In what?
Masters degree. In what?]
Probably wymyn’s studies or the study of some 3rd-world backward nation.
I knew a pretty young lady. She had $150,000 in undergrad debt. That was quite an accomplishment. She was a sweet girl. She told me she was thinking of going for her Master’s.
She’ll never pay that off. Unless she happens to get a winning Powerball ticket or something.
Or if her parents are already multi-millionaires. I doubt it, given that I saw her car.
“I made a gawdawful stoopid decision and now someone else has to pay.”
Nope.
I have absolutely no sympathy for these idiots.
Who in the hell encouraged this kind feckless behavior?
“Occupy” protests are so ten minutes ago.
Does that mean you supported the bank bailouts?
I wonder if student financial aid offices have been hinting to applicants that the government would eventually forgive this debt?
Obama took control of the student loan program after taking office—was there an understanding? Did these kids realize that they were in debt to the federal government, not the bank?
The thing is— this kid is so stupid and self-centered that I don’t think he can be held responsible.
Who gave this child all that money?
So, you borrowed $190k, got a fluff education ( as evidenced by your measly $4k per month income) and you and your parents are now voluntarily indentured servants of the finance system. What did you think would happen?
Enjoy your journey. America gave you the opportunity, you wanted the fast track apparently. Many thousands of students work their way through school, paying it as they go ( makes more sense now, huh?) and walk away with no or little student debt.
Quit complaining. Put your shoulder to the wheel and push, harder. Default is not an option since mom and pop would be held for your debt.
There is a better way.
If not so doing now, move back in with Mom and Dad, cut your expenses to the bone, forget “fun”, pay it off as fast as you can and you’ll be the better man for it.
Oh, the military offers loan repayment programs for enlistees and officer programs. Might be a way, but I kinda doubt you’re cut of the cloth that would so do.
“Pursuit of happiness”.
And reviewing his webpage and such, he racked up a heck of a lot of international travel expenses. Mid-east of course.
A real SJW with a degree that has SJW in the degrees name.
He is an ignorant putz that FEELS he is important to the world.
