In the wake the landmark $44 million verdict against Oberlin College for defaming a 5-generation family business, information is coming to light about the behavior of students and administrators at that once-respectable institution that is simply appalling. As throughout the entire story, Legal Insurrection is owed a huge thank-you for its deep dive into the evidence.

Once these students graduate and leave the protected environment of the college campus they are going to have a rude awakening. If you steal from someone say such as myself not only will you be chased and detained but you may receive a serious beat down.
Too bad there is not a conservative legal foundation ready to sue and pounce on state employees especially at state run colleges and universities that violate the constitutional rights of students who engage in free speech or free associations. Make them pay.
Personal property is an expression of your “self”. If you lose the right to personal property (and theft is OK), then you lose a part of your individuality.
Socialism means the annihilation of the individual, in favor of “the masses”.
And that ain’t a good thing.
Well, yeah, that is what a little socialist would say.
Too bad the Gibson kid didn't just offer more free stuff - turn the bakery into a coop food shelter - that's how Barry operated. Gibson he could have been a HopeAndChange president. That's worth way more than 33 million.
BFL, & loving every second of this...

Only a self-absorbed ghetto dweller could hold that attitude.
To most of normal America, the guilt of the students was the largest consideration. And since the jury was composed of people from the town, who were probably very tired of being victimized by the diverse students, this was one of the most stupid legal tactics ever attempted.
Michelle Malkin has a lot to say about Oberlin, her alma mater.
Hard to believe they are educators. And could not see the forest for the trees.
The college is in serious financial difficulty & will probably have to close if the jury awards are held up .... even if reduced somewhat, Oberlin is in trouble. Based on the cultural rot on display, I’d say that was a good thing!
Here’s more bad news for Oberlin:
EXCLUSIVE: Oberlin College insurer [Lexington] likely to reject coverage for Gibson Bakery $11 million verdict and also for the potential additional $22 million in punitive damages, if those are awarded in a separate hearing.
https://legalinsurrection.com/2019/06/exclusive-oberlin-college-insurer-likely-to-reject-coverage-for-gibson-bakery-11-million-verdict/
The bottom line:
“Accordingly, based on Lexingtons court filing, it is likely that Oberlin College, should its post-trial motions and appeals fail, will have to pay out of pocket and then sue Lexington.”
Got a link?
Perhaps some of the townspeople need to find out where the idiot who made that stupid statement lives and break into his house.
How much do you want to bet that the self-absorbed hypocrite would call the police and press charges?
So sad. Since I’ve been binge-watching the brilliant Dobie Gillis series from the late 50s-early 60s, I have to say: kids have really changed for the worse.
Given the awards we are seeing there will likely be far more of these actions brought in the future as they appear very lucrative for lawyers.
The young man from Kentucky and his attorneys will likely have some big pay days coming up. This may be the only way to rein in some of the silliness.
I highly doubt the "serious financial trouble" proclamation. Oberlin has an endowment of $800 million to $1B, depending on how it is counted and the stock market at any moment.
Even if they end up paying the full $44 million, that is about 4.5% of their endowment. So what happens is their annual budget from endowment shrinks by 4.5%. Inconvenient, yes. But it is nowhere near a deathblow.
Cut back on scholarships for thugs, which was the real reason for this problem, and everything is OK. Now the reality is that they will appeal until the family has passed on and then settle for less. And, they will continue to bring as many thugs as possible onto their campus.
Oberlin is very much not a state college.
Once these students graduate and leave the protected environment of the college campus they are going to have a rude awakening.
Indeed a career in being cell mates.
