Target, Walmart among 600 companies asking President Trump to end trade war with China

Walmart and Target are the problem.

EVERYTHING sold in Walmart (except most groceries) is from China.

Don't know about Target, but I presume they are exactly the same.

I know, not (everything). But close enough.

I totally support President Trump.

Have supported him, since before he even announced his candidacy.

But he needs to act.

Or democrats will clobber him.

No.

It is completely true. Not just Walmart.

Everywhere.

Trump is NOT doing anything yet

Not true.

Trump is terrific. But our trade deficit with China last year, was the absolute WORST IN WORLD HISTORY.

Worst ever.

Purchases from China went up last year in anticipation of 25% tariffs. Trump's 25% tariffs went into effect in May. You could argue that he was too patient with China. But you can't argue that is "not doing anything". 25% tariffs are nontrivial. As for your concern about the trade deficit, the numbers for May aren't out yet, never mind June with tariffs fully in effect. But the deficit is down this year compared to last year. The numbers are comparable to 2013 or 2014.

Far as I’m concerned, Target can close. Ever since they went pro-Islam and anti-US Veteran I’ve never shopped there.

Don't mess with my avocados and cheap household goods.

To hell with a self sufficient nation that takes its sovereignty seriously.

Would be a disaster to drop the tariffs on Chinese goods; the trade imbalance would never again be brought under control.

Yes, the same thing happened to Walt Disney, who abhorred socialism.

“Wouldn’t be so sure about their produce.”

Produce is Mexico. Seafood is China.

Should nuke them? Invade? What?

It's from CBS so I think they want Trump to capitulate.

Umm... Slight change there, Wal-Mart & Target pay the import tax, the consumer then gets the decision if the price is right or not, and should the consumer think the price is wrong, they don’t buy whatever trinket it is on the shelf.

Since much of this is impulse purchases or clothing, Wal-Mart & Target rightly believe that they’re going to sell less trinkets. The obvious solution is to buy fewer trinkets to sell, or find a different source that doesn’t have the taxes they are concerned with.

Either way, it’s over junk few really need. The only real impact will be on clothing, and even then, the import duties won’t affect the price that much compared to the markup that the retailers already collect. Meanwhile, competitors in other countries will try to push their products forward that don’t come with the duties - and that’s China’s real problem - what happens if the retailers form relationships with other countries and don’t come back?

How about China stops stealing IP as a national policy, and commits to specific legal enforcement and penalties against violators within China?

How about China gives American companies reciprocal access to Chinese markets?

It is not complex, it is entirely up to China. Cry to them, Walmart and Target.

The legions of damaged people wandering the aisles of Target & WalMart are a testimony to the effectiveness of propaganda put forward by a corrupt political class and it’s lackey media. At this point in our history, America is beyond repair.

You can bet that Walmart & Target are frantically attempting to source products from countries not currently on the tariff list. But it takes time. Doesn’t happen overnight or even in 1 or 2 quarters.

Walmart & Target might source from the US if the products they sold were still made here. It took 30 years to drive those companies out of business or overseas. It’s going to take years of sustained tariffs for those companies to consider returning.

Many if not most chips and circuit boards. Whether or not the main product ( tv…computer…car electronics etc) are made in China. And I believe if they get pissed Off enough they’ll push a button and disable our devices. The big news is the F-35 fighter-bomber contains Chinese electronic components thanks to Obama.

That’s why we must stop using anything but bamboo place mats from China.

If it’s from CBS it makes sense.

The do not want this President to have a victory of any kind and a lifting of the tariffs without verifiable progress (not just a verbal agreement) would be blasted by the media as a capitulation...and therefore a loss.

President Trump, please do something.

For real.

We really, really need to completely change directions on trade with China.
