Tom Homan: I Haven’t Accepted ‘Border Czar’ Post
breitbart ^ | 6/15/19 | Joshua Caplan

Appearing Saturday on the Fox News Channel with host Neil Cavuto, former Acting Director of ICE Tom Homan said he has not accepted the White House’s offer to serve as “border czar,” despite President Donald Trump announcing the day prior that he had done so.

NEIL CAVUTO: We’re told you are the president’s choice to be his “border czar.” Is that true?

TOM HOMAN: I think yesterday’s announcement, the White House has made it clear it was kind of premature. Look, I’ve had discussions with the White House, they’ve approached me. I was first approached by Secretary Nielsen about this job and I declined it because I didn’t think the job was structured right. I didn’t think it had the proper authority. I think a “border czar” needs to be structured in a way they can coordinate activities from DHS, DOJ, DOD, HHS. They all have a piece of this border issue. I think any sort of “border czar” needs to be a person who coordinates an all-government response to the border. When I first had the discussions, that wasn’t the way it was set up. I certainly don’t want to come back and fail this president. I don’t think we should create another policy position as that’s not will have effectiveness on this border so as of right now, I am not accepting the job, but the discussions will continue.

Sounds like he doesn’t want the job.
Better to find that out right now.

I think he doesn’t want to be a figurehead then have the whole mess drop on him the end. Pretty smart actually.

"Sounds like he doesn’t want the job."

Perhaps not.

To me, it sounds like he wants to help but doesn't want the job to be set up for failure.

If the position comes with a tether connected to some swampy bureaucrat, I would’t want it either.

But wasn’t he talking tough yesterday as if he had already accepted the position? Seems like he might have got this a little out of order.

I agree. Jobs with responsibilities but no authority usually don’t work out.

Well, he earned himself a participation trophy for all that talk. Tough talk before actually getting anything done is a red flag. (Note that Barr has done the same thing.)

Agreed.

Barr is a Deep State cover-up artist and a very smooth one at that.

I’m sorry but I completely disagree. Bar was the death knell for the Mueller SC. RR would have sold Trump down the river if the obstruction call was his alone and we all know it. His legal positions and inability to suffer fools and their BS has been Trump’s biggest champion as of recently...Imho.
Of course there is much left undone but I am more confident than ever thanks to William Barr.

He would be smart to not accept if it’s offered. The problem is not with the various organizations not coordinating. The problem resides with the laws and regulations that they must abide by. The solution is for congress to get off its ass and pass some strict but fair immigration laws. But, won’t happen until the GOP regains both houses and keeps the presidency. May not even happen then. Last time we had all three branches the GOP couldn’t get it done. Was just a big pissing contest.

Why not?

Is he stupid and is turning out to be a disappointment?

I could see that he wants to have enough authority, not just be a figurehead, but that discussion should take place in private, not blasted on TV.

No question about that. It won’t happen, though, unless Republican win back the House and keep the Senate. Even then, it won’t happen unless they get a filibuster proof majority in the Senate. And that probably won’t happen either.

Well if he’s going to be border czar, then he’s going to need the power over these various gov agencies to actually get things done. I don’t blame him for holding out, he doesn’t want to become an ineffective figurehead where he gets blamed for things he has no control over. Perhaps Trump is worried about someone being too tough or controvercial because it might complicate his re-election strategy, making him appear heartless or some such nonsense. In any event I hope Trump reconsiders and give this guy the authority he needs to be effective in that position.
