BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) Beto ORourke took a path somewhat less traveled on Friday, meeting with a small group representing a community of slave descendants in South Carolina as he strives to make connections with the black voters who will play a dominant role in next years Southern presidential primaries.
In the community room of a Baptist church in Beaufort, a picturesque historic enclave on the states southern coast, the Democratic presidential candidate and former Texas congressman met with leaders of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, a culture of coastal slave descendants.
Known as Gullah in the Carolinas and Geechee in Georgia and Florida, the culture is based on farming and fishing and has its own Creole language, history, cooking and crafts, with its communities nestled primarily among a 35-mile cascade of barrier islands. Scholars say separation from the mainland allowed the Gullah to retain much of their African heritage, including a unique dialect and skills such as cast-net fishing and basket weaving.

So hes whitesplaining slavery now?
Sounds like cultural appropriation to me.
“”Known as Gullah in the Carolinas and Geechee in Georgia and Florida, the culture is based on farming and fishing and has its own Creole language, history, cooking and crafts, with its communities nestled primarily among a 35-mile cascade of barrier islands. And I suspect that they have absolutely no interest in anything that’s going on in Washington but he’s there to stir them up just in case!!!
It’s probably only in those islands off SC and around NC and GA that there truly are descendants of slaves but they’d never be able to prove it (not that it would be required if the reparations bill goes anywhere). I doubt if anyone has any records of such. They are certainly not going to be the likes of any of those blacks who have been raised to expect handouts - or like those who have made it to Congress none of whom are as self sufficient as these folks.
Makes me think of Pat Conroy and all his books about that area...great, great author and great loss!
“bringing them here in bondage to literally build the wealth of the United States”
Gee, that’s interesting. What were the other 90% of the people doing? Sipping mint juleps on the porch?
Here and I thought the Old South was po’ cuz all they could do was grown cotton and tobacco.
Maybe he might wanna read Hinton Helper’s little tract that showed the South was poor BECAUSE of slavery.
Like, before he and his democrat buddies put on their masks and go on a midnight robbery ride.
We all know enough about slavery to know it’s time to live in the present and move on. Stop the endless bellyaching. You cannot change the past by offering empty, ceremonial apologies to acts you had nothing to do with. “Stay outta the Bushes!” as Jesse Jackson once said.
And did he tell about all those black people who petitioned the court to go back into slavery because they were unable to care for themselves?
Did he tell about the slave auctions in Boston and why Massachusetts people could not free their slaves without posting a large bond to cover the cost of caring for them?
Did he talk about the tens of thousands of black people who were slave owners. Some owned hundreds of slaves.
Wow, he might have gotten somthing (accidently) right.
A lot of people really don’t know about all this...

.
The issue is not the history of slavery (we do in fact know it, Beto) or how we repay those who suffered under it (as there are no living former slaves). The debate today is over reparations. That is what many white people have an issue with, Beto.
This statement is horrible. White Americans don’t know, but black ones do?
Nobody alive today was alive then, people only know it from history.
This man is taken seriously? Really?
Every time the left brings up slavery, the response should be to ask about Anthony Johnson circa 1655.
I know other african blacks and muslims sold black slaves to anyone who’d buy them. If they didnt slaughter their tribes completely.
I know for centuries african muslims raided european towns and took whites and sold them and used them as slaves.
“We’re the Democrats: Using Black people exactly as we’ve done since slavery times.”
I heard he was in the Marines
Lol, skills like basket weaving and cast-net fishing, huh? Did Pell Grants pay for that?
Best laugh my husband and I have had all day :-)
I am beyond sick of these hypocrite white bastards and their disgusting Racial pandering
Get off your knees Beto
If you were anywhere near where slaves were, make it 40% humidity.
But you, Robert... you know it.. oh if only everyone else was as enlightened and as wonderful as you the world would be at peace...
What an ass clown.
