Woman Bit by Bear Exemplifies How Useful a Handgun Could Have Been
Ammoland ^ | 12 June, 2019 | Dean Weingarten

U.S.A.-(Ammoland.com)-On 31 May, 2019, at about 1 p.m., a woman hiking with her husband on a popular trail near Aspen, Colorado, was bitten in an unprovoked attack by a black bear. She was bitten on the thigh and required hospitalization for a short period.

Most bears that show no fear of humans have become acclimated to humans. Bears that have no fear of humans are likely to test humans to see if humans are potential prey. Eventually, the bears have a good chance of causing harm.

The case illustrates how effective a pistol could be at stopping bear attacks, especially black bear attacks.

The bear had to be stopped, because it had become a danger to humans. If the woman or her husband had been carrying a common pistol, they could have stopped the bear attack and terminated the bear before any harm was done.

The bear was an adult male of about 224 pounds. The woman who was attacked understands the necessity of killing the bear. From kdvr.com:

But she understands why CPW had to put the bear down.

“It breaks my heart, but I do (understand) because in this case, the bear was not afraid. I found out this is a path used by kids, it’s close to the city, thank goodness an old gnarly lady, not a child… could’ve been disastrous,” Jansson said.

CPW found the bear within 100 feet of where it attacked Jansson.

We’re up to our asses in bears. The household Garbage cans in Gulf Breeze had to be replaced with ‘bear-proof’ cans. The Florida Fish and Wildlife have captured these bears, put tracking GPS collars on them, and moved them 500 miles away and they come back!..........

Evidently they eat PETA members

I wouldn't mind tying few to trees and pouring honey over them. Would that be baiting? {:0)

Isn’t that standard bear defense ‘throw a PETA person in the path of a charging bear’?

I don’t go unarmed anywhere, period.

I don't either, but around here I open carry a big bore wheel gun. In town, when I go, I opt for a concealed compact 9mm.

The forest just down the road is where problem bears from various towns get relocated to. Like we don't have enough as it is.

“After scanning some photo’s of PETA employees

There’s a good chance you’ll be able to outrun the PETA employee.”

There’s a 100% chance of being able to outrun the PETA employee if you shoot him/her/it in the knee with a .22. Oh, and at the same time, you’ll have proven that a .22 can save your life in a bear attack.

Pepper spray is very effective at deterring a curious bear moving too close. Skunks have proved this concept to be fact for millenia. I would trust it much less against a bear in an aggression mode. There a pistol is ok, but I’d rather have a long gun.

I shot a 300 lb boar with a .44 mag. It too a few licks and a little time for him to go quiet. Much adrenaline! I’d say a full powered .357 is the least you’d want.

RE Boars:

Nasty critters; all muscle and one giant pissed-off temper tantrum on four legs...

Good with barbecue sauce, though.... and potatoes...

Last week I took the dog out in the morning, turned around to come back in and came face to face with a bear standing in front of my door.

I thought: “OH, SHIT! A BEAR!,” then did exactly what you’re not supposed to do, turned my back to the thing and dragged the dog through the woods across the street to the neighbor’s porch, where I stood there stammering: “OH, SHIT! A BEAR!”.

A few minutes later I gingerly made my way back into my house. Somewhere in-between the bear wandered off. My neighbor said they’re looking to raid garbage cans, not get into conflict with people - but I don’t want to test that out EVER again.

Pretty rare. Most black bears just want to get away when they see you. A 10mm on the hip is reasonable for the rest.

I’ve hunted bears with handguns for years. I understand there is a difference between hunting and defense, but they’ve worked well for me.

Many problem bears are relocated by the government from Wyoming ( Yellowstone, etc.) to the Moab, Utah area. Reports of large ( Canadian timber ) wolves , too.

The grizzly population of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem has more than tripled since 1987…

Most fatal attacks by North American black bears during the past century were conducted by lone, male bears that stalked and then killed their human victims as prey : source of food .

The urban myth that surprising a mother bear with cubs is the most dangerous kind of black bear encounter is inaccurate.

I don’t think so. I think the bear will remove his arms, making the gun control advocate less hypocritical.
