Border War: Los Angeles officials clash with burbs over homeless 'dumping'
Fox News ^ | 14 June 2019 | Andrew O'Reilly

The 405 Freeway underpass along Venice Boulevard has become a flashpoint in the escalating homelessness crisis plaguing Southern California.

The road is a border between worlds. On the north side of the famed street is Los Angeles -- and a sidewalk packed with sun-bleached tents, dirty sleeping bags, bikes in various states of disrepair and even a few surfboards belonging to residents of the underpass’ homeless population. On the south side is Culver City, a storied moviemaking hub and a peaceful suburban oasis.

On a recent weekday morning, Culver City’s side was noticeably bereft of any sign of the homeless sprawl just across the street, save for a lone tent.

Scenes like this are apparent across the Los Angeles region, where homeless camps and tent cities have cropped all over the city of Los Angeles while just across the border in suburbs like Culver City, Manhattan Beach and Rancho Palos Verdes these encampments are nowhere to be seen. This disparity has infuriated Los Angeles city councilmembers and led to claims that L.A.’s neighbors are not just shirking their responsibility in tackling the region’s homeless crisis, but are actively pushing the homeless into L.A.’s city limits.

“They’re slacking, and some are not even doing that much,” Branimir Kvartuc, a spokesperson for L.A. city Councilman Joe Buscaino, told Fox News. “Some are taking the homeless out of their cities and moving them to the L.A. city side.”

If Los Angeles City wants to mollycoddle the homeless they are welcome to do so at their own peril.

Were I to live in an LA suburb, I would want my city leaders to get rid of the homeless with “I don’t care where they go...but they’re not staying here.”

If they go to LA...or somewhere else, what difference does it make.

It would be the height of cruelty for Culver City to force the homeless to stay where they are not welcome, when literal sanctuary is available just across the street...

I agree. If I were Los Angeles, I’d kick them out of the city. Then other cities could do the same.

This nonsense doesn’t have to be tolerated > IMO.

I don’t see them in my town much. I’m sure there are some around.

Curious as to if East LA has a homeless problem. Seems to me the Latino folk wouldn’t put up with it in their neighborhood.

It will not fix itself and will only get worse

most people can’t afford to pay $3000 for a one bedroom apartment

And the Liberals here provide such services food and everything else for the homeless then they’re going to be inclined to stay in overtime

Democrats did this to themselves ... let them wallow in the mess their phony ‘compassion’ and virtue signaling caused...

The only way we get California back will be through military action.
It is a Mexican colony.

“L.A. will soon turn into a Calcutta or New Delhi. You will have slums, a business district, and a few enclaves for the rich.”

Yes, that is the plan.

It appears to me that the suburb cities are taking responsibility. Responsibility to their constituents...

It’s not dumping when you are a sanctuary.

LA wasn't the first to declare itself a sanctuary city, but one of the last, so declaring itself last February. So this is something they walked into with both eyes open - anyone unaware of this issue in California alone simply isn't paying attention. Or has other motives.

The real trick to progressive virtue signaling is to get somebody else to pay for it. I wouldn't be surprised to see the county government put the touch on such places as Culver City - pony up or we'll dump them there. They're not going to get it from the federal government and the state is $1.2 Trillion in debt. The "surplus" they so widely tout is an accounting trick. About their only recourse is to hope that the Dems take the federal government and open the money floodgates. Their virtue, your pocketbook.

I live on the coast in CA. our city recently rehabbed our downtown area with a beautiful park, big gazebo lots of local type restaurants and shops, WELL you should see the place!!! Tent cities have taken over the park human waste EVERYWHERE it has become disgusting and NO ONE does a damn thing about it!!! These brand new small businesses owners are dying on the vine, brand new police department is on the same block AND they can’t do a damn thing mayor, and city council have ordered them HANDS OFF!!! What a WASTE of taxpayer money to completely beautify the area and then within a year let it become a COMPLETE GHETTO!!!
