The government is in "pretty good shape" to cope with a no-deal Brexit, the head of civil service has said.
Speaking at an event organised by the Institute for Government, Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwill said there had been "a lot of preparation".
He said: "We have got the government in pretty good shape and public services in pretty good shape for it".
A key issue in the Tory leadership campaign has been whether a no-deal Brexit should be an option for the UK.
The top three contenders so far in the race to become the leader of the Conservative Party - and therefore prime minster - have all said they would consider leaving the EU without a deal.
Boris Johnson, the frontrunner thus far, clarified he was "not aiming for a no-deal outcome" for Brexit at the launch of his campaign for the Tory leadership.
But he stressed the threat that Britain could cuts its European ties without a deal was a "vital" negotiation tool... Some MPs were hoping to prevent this scenario from happening, but on Wednesday the Commons rejected a Labour-led effort that would have enabled opponents of a no-deal Brexit the chance to table legislation to thwart the UK leaving without any agreement on the 31 October deadline.
Mr Sedwill's comments contrast with those made by many British businesses.
Figures seen by BBC's Newsnight have suggested that many UK businesses "are not even close to being ready".

The US position as outlined by President Trump is that we will negotiate. Thats it. The Remoaners tried to run with a scare story about the NHS just like they previously tried to run with a scare story about chlorine washed chickens. All President Trump said was everything is on the table in a negotiation and then after the Remoaners tried to make hay out of a completely innocuous statement like that, he clarified the next day and said the British themselves will determine what they are willing to negotiate in any deal.
This makes sense - the UK will have no other option.
Remoaner spin/Project Fear part II
The fact is that for a "quick trade deal", the weaker state will need to agree to the standards of the stronger state.
This is just fearmongering. This is the same crap Leftist Yurps in Britain have been spewing for decades....ie anything other than rolling over to Brussels and reducing itself to subservience to the EU automatically means Britain will be a colony of America......the 51st State, blah blah blah.
Pure horse crap.
Well, isn’t that special? Private business loses billions as Parliament takes a leisurely stroll to Maybe/Maybe-not Land.
But the politicians and civil servants are doing just fine.
Dilly dilly!
Actually you are using the same tactics the dummycrats use, namely no facts and just saying this is project fear.
The fact is that the UK will need to switch to American standards immediately in order to get a quick deal.
I dunno how old you are but I distinctly remember the Lefties in the U.K. making similar claims as far back as the 80s about how Britain was a poodle, Americas colony, the 51st state blah blah blah for standing firm against the Commies and not towing the supposedly sophisticated Yurp line that victory in the Cold War was impossible.....that the best Britain could do was manage its decline and other weak kneed surrender monkey crap like that.
The Leftists in Britain are Yurps at heart - forever trying to belittle Britain and act as a 5th column for the continent. The latest page out of that book is project fear II.....ie no health and safety standards, goodbye NHS, 51st State, American colony blah blah blah.
Ive seen this crap from them for DECADES.
