Boris Johnson tops first ballot in Tory leadership contest

Boris Johnson has secured the highest number of votes in the first ballot to select the Conservative party leader and next prime minister.

Three contenders - Mark Harper, Andrea Leadsom and Esther McVey - have been knocked out, in the secret ballot held in the House of Commons.

Mr Johnson received 114 votes, Jeremy Hunt was second with 43, and Michael Gove third with 37 votes.

Seven candidates progress to the next round of voting next week.

The two most popular MPs will be put to Tory party members in a final vote later this month.

The winner of the contest to succeed Theresa May is expected to be announced in the week of 22 July.

All 313 Conservative MPs voted in the first ballot. Mr Johnson said he was "delighted to win the first ballot, but we have a long way to go".

Foreign Secretary Mr Hunt said he was "delighted" to have come second, saying: "This serious moment calls for a serious leader."

And Environment Secretary Mr Gove said it was "all to play for" and he was "very much looking forward" to the TV debates on Channel 4 on Sunday and on BBC One on Tuesday next week. ...

Multiple rounds of voting until only 2 remain who will be put before the whole Tory party membership. Boris almost certain to be 1 of the 2 and he currently has a massive lead among Tory members.

I’d be very surprised if Boris Johnson becomes PM

He’s hated by many, and carries a lot of baggage.

The corrupt establishment uniparty in the UK need a fresh faced stooge to continue Theresa May’s fraudulent work - to deliver Brexit without really delivering Brexit

I expect Jeremy Hunt to win - there was a reason Trump met with him 6 times during the state visit.

If he maintains 114 votes, he is assured making it to the final two. With 313, that means 199 votes remaining so no two other candidates can get more votes than him... if that 114 keeps.

Jeremy Hunt almost guarantees a Labour government or at the very least a Labour Party in the driver’s seat of policy. A Johnson PM means the Brexit party wilts and the Tories rule the roost.

As an outside observer, I’m not sure that Boris Johnson is a true Brexiter. More of an opportunist if you ask me. However, he may still be the right man even if this is true. In order to ensure a success of his prime ministership, he will have to deliver a successful Brexit. Even if he is just an opportunist, he knows that he has to deliver on his promises. Better to have him than a Theresa May. He’s even talking about a no Brexit deal being on the table.

To your point, even though I voted for Trump (because I'd crawl over broken glass to vote against Hillary) I didn't believe his promises. I thought of him as a typical New York country club republican that makes promises he has no intention of keeping. Boy was I wrong!! I'm totally on the Trump train now (minus a couple ill advised tweets and some foreign policy decisions) and believe the same scenario might be setting up with Johnson....
