Pence defends decision to ban Pride flags from flying at U.S. embassies

Vice President Mike Pence confirmed reports that Pride flags had been banned from U.S. embassies, and expressed his support for the administration's decision. June is Pride Month, and in an interview with NBC's Kristen Welker, the vice president said four embassies' requests to fly rainbow flags, which symbolize LGBTQ pride, were denied.

"I'm aware that the State Department indicated that on the flagpole of our American embassies, one flag should fly, and that's the American flag. And I support that," Pence said.

Welker pressed him about President Trump's tweet in support of LGBTQ Pride Month, and whether it contradicts the rainbow flag ban.

The embassies represent the country USA. That is the flag they need to fly.

NOT fly a flag of some sub group. This is bigger than whether people approve or not.

This has nothing to do with favoring or discriminating against anyone. We have any number of “causes” that claim commemorative months (Black history, breast cancer, etc.). The US Flag is not a prop for rotating “awareness” campaigns.

2. The only holidays celebrated at any Embassy or government building are those designated by law as official holidays.

Just because there are a bunch of confused Americans, doesn’t mean America is. Embassies represent the government of the country, sovereign territory. They are not there to represent every whack job, peccadillo, or lunatic fringe group individually, they represent the whole country.

What were the four embassies? I see our ambassador to Germany requested but Germany isn’t known to imprison or murder homosexuals. Where else, besides Germany requested? Did they fly during Obama’s time in office, why are we hearing this in 2019? I don’t remember anything in 2017 or 2018 about this made up controversy.
