BOSTON (CBS) David Ortiz has reportedly been shot during a robbery attempt in the Dominican Republic. Ortiz was shot and wounded at an amusement center in Santo Domingo, his father told ESPNs Enrique Rojas.Ortizs condition is not known.
I am not sports fan at all. I don't watch sports or read about sports or follow sports in any way. I don't have any idea who these players or teams are.
Maybe his big mouth is what got him shot in DR.
He is a Dominican that grew up in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. These rich athletes take a chance when they visit their home countries. They become targets.
ESPN: Ortiz suffered liver damage, and doctors “had to remove part of Ortiz’s intestines and colon, as well as his gallbladder.”
And this immediately reminds me of Benny "Kid" Paret and Emile Griffith.
Sorry, my bad. I was in a rush to post the breaking news and failed to identify who he is; and apparently not everyone is an insane sports fan like most people here in New England.
Not everyone is an insane BOSTON fan like NE.
E..g., Pittsburgh is a nutty place.
Ive found there are people who know all about THEIR locales players, etc, but not necessarily all those others. So it goes both ways. I am pretty knowledgeable about major sports stars in history (I will not be very good with current). My husband mentions Bill Mazeroski like we all know who he is. He mentions how he won the WS for the Pirates in 60, like it should be common knowledge.
Sure enough he is officially HOF. But further inspection reveals this is possibly another example of someone elevated to HOF status because of one play. But to this casual fan and big history fan, the name doesnt register. Well, now I know it because my husband is one of those Pittsburgh types. This Baltimore person doesnt know it. He is simply not the level of Honus Wagner or Roberto Clemente, but the locals think everyone should know that.
This is our fng sitee. Stay strong!

...... interesting.
Trump put a hit out on him through a Russian bag man, because he wouldn’t walk away./wait for CNN to say it.

May David have a complete recovery, Lord. Amen.

Praying for his complete recovery. Looks to me like an organized crime hit job. Big Papi’s efforts to improve life in the DR evidently impacted someone’s cheese. He’s Boston Strong.
Just stay away from the DR. Not worth it.
OMG! Thanks for that update, NautiNurse. Awful. I'm so glad Big Papi survived this, but this will certainly be an unfortunate life-changing event for him. :-(
Continued prayers for Big Papi...
I was wondering about that. My first thought when I heard Ortiz was in surgery was "I'm sure this DR hospital is nowhere near as good as most US hospitals... I hope he survives the surgery".
Yes... sounds like Big Papi lucked out, as far as the hospital he landed in.
Hmm... you bring up a good point. I never considered that perhaps this could be an organized crime hit job. I have no idea what life is like in the DR, except there are a lot of American MLB recruitment schools / centers there.
Yes, Big Papi is Boston Strong. Continued prayers for his complete recovery.
Adopted Bostonian, Sox LEGEND. Good man. Prayers David Ortiz. I’m married to a Boston Boy (don’t worry, he’s old school blue collar and HARD CORE RIGHT WING, born and raised a red diaper baby too, then saw the light in college) and he’s beside himself that Big Papi was shot.

Yup. And now a *fourth* American tourist has died suspiciously there. WHAT the hell is going on there??
The DR wasn't high on our list, but hubby and I thought perhaps we might visit the DR someday as we are big baseball fans - many players are recruited from the DR, and American MLB teams have recruitment schools/centers there. The DR is crossed off our list now for sure. Not worth the risk.
Ha ha ha! It’s not your fault! I’m was a journalism major in college and it’s sad to see so many “journalists” these days who don’t adhere to the basics. I was just tagging on the dork who thinks we all should know MLB.
