Oh-oh! Oberlin College’s insurance . . . doesn’t cover the huge verdict against it

Full title of article:

"Oh-oh! Oberlin College’s insurance company says their policy doesn’t cover the huge verdict against it"

Excerpt:

The insurer that covers Oberlin College for liability, Lexington Insurance Company, filed documents with court last month indicating that its umbrella liability policy would not cover costs of any judgment for the plaintiffs. That means that if, after the appeals process has run its course, the plaintiffs move to collect the $11 million a jury just awarded them (plus whatever punitive damages – up to $22 more – are awarded next week), Lexington likely won’t pay and Oberlin would have to sue for reimbursement.

“It’s so unfortunate when a liberal mouth overloads their ass and they have to start to behave responsibility.”

I believe the saying is: “They have an alligator mouth and a hummingbird a$$!”

This needs to happen much more frequently. It used to be that people would be reasonable and wait to hear facts, but with the social justice crowd the “facts” are already loaded - they just need a trigger of any kind including one of their own making.

Intentional torts are rarely covered by liability insurance.

Donica Thomas Varner, the college's general counsel, said he was disappointed with the verdict and denied the college had defamed the bakery or its owners.

Sounds like certain attorneys need to get curbstomped till they get their minds right...

Another important part of this case: Oberlin College said that in order for Gibson's to keep its catering contract with the school, the bakery had to drop the charges against the three students who shoplifted from them AND promise not call police for future shoplifters...

Oberlin should be burned to the ground.

It means the reason for the award is not covered.

Denison University in Ohio is like Oberlin...small DIII lib arts college that Ohio seems to have many of: in addition, Hiram, Heidelberg, Otterbein, Ohio Wesleyan et al.

In 2002 I was involved with a huge utility relocation project at Denison. At the time Denison had 54 million in endowment $$$ and were required to spend at least 5 million/year.

If treble damages to to $33 million and Oberlin can’t pay I hope it gets to the point where Gibson gets to walk around campus saying, “I’ll take the Administration building, the library, the physical plant, the cafeteria, the gym...”

You would be wrong about alumni support. I know some of them. But I would not worry too much about the school. It has a $1 billion endowment so will hardly miss a few tens of millions. Worst case they will have to shift to domestic beer from imported in the faculty dining room. The schools tuition, room and board and fees are $70K+ a year. Not many in that part of Ohio make that much in a year which explains some of the town and gown tensions.

I was worried that it might actually cover this. Glad to hear they’re not going to.

No one there will care a fig about the amount of the judgement. Their reaction would be the same if it was $50k.

A nasty bunch of leftists. My uber leftist nephew went there and put his middle class parents into debt they never recovered from. Both died broke just after he graduated and married a super uber leftist New Porker. Shame on him.
