The US and Russian warships came somewhere between 50 feet and 165 feet of each other, according to the two opposing reports, with both sides alleging their ships were forced to perform emergency maneuvers to avoid a collision, which can be seen in video and a picture of the event obtained by CNN.
"A Russian destroyer .... made an unsafe maneuver against USS Chancellorsville, closing to 50-100 feet, putting the safety of her crew and ship at risk," US Navy spokesman Cmdr. Clayton Doss told CNN in a statement.
"This unsafe action forced Chancellorsville to execute all engines back full and to maneuver to avoid collision," Doss said.
The US guided-missile cruiser was traveling in a straight line and trying to recover its helicopter when the incident occurred, he said.
"We consider Russia's actions during this interaction as unsafe and unprofessional," Doss said.

Playing Chicken. No winner no loser.
Had they collided, both captains would be in deep doo-doo.............
the cruiser is bigger.
Shadowing one another.
Well, after watching the tv series Chernobyl, I wouldnt be surprised if the Russians forgot to put a steering wheel on their ship.
It's all fun and games until someone starts a nuclear war ;)
The stupid doofuses at CNN can’t drop their CNN lower third banner so we can actually see the dang video!!!
What a joke Russia has become - the once mighty Soviet Union, the terror of the Western world for decades, is now the equivalent of the town drunk. From world-wide menace to nuisance - unfortunately there’s no way to suspend Russia’s driving license and get them out of the sea lanes and airways until they completely exhaust all of the little money they have left.
Tread carefully, Ivan.
In open water? Sounds like the Russian were playing chicken. Would the Russian captain do this on his own, or was this coming down from The Kremlin?
Your average Russkie doesn't take a crap without a plan, son.
My God that was close. You dont get that close even during underway replenishment. Having been on an LPH that was nudged by a carrier in port, the force exerted by two large ships with such mass is enormous.
Steering Casualty Drills?
Both ships would have sustained massive damage.
I can remember a rogue pilot laying a trail of smoke bombs right up to but not hitting a Russian destroyer who had been shadowing us about 1 mile off our port side. I heard whooping and sirens as the ship pulled in a tight circle. I went in to mission planning and myself and another enlisted IS were told to leave as the Captain brushed past us. I could hear through the doubled bulheaded walls of CVIC, the Captain screaming out loud for more than 5 minutes. I never saw the two pilots after that day. They were tense times for all as only a week before a sailor had his head crushed like an egg against a bulkhead of our Carrier as a coupling from a fuel line was sent flying from an emergancy break away during an UNREP because a Russian AGI “Trawler” came right up between the Indy and the supply ship causing us to release all lines of fuel to prevent an international incident. SO many other serious incedents happened during the cold war, I’m still amazed we never got in a full blown war with Russia. This recent incident is harmless in comparison and more common than we know.
The headline is grossly misleading, big surprise.
One warship simply pulled alongside the other, maybe 40 yards apart.
Leave it to the news media to rewrite reality.
